MapSource for nuvi 350

| The unit is wonderful straight out of the box.
But... I keep seeing MapSource. Is it free or not? What can you do with
it? Is there a site or book or something that spells all of this out? I
find Garmin's site less helpful than the GPS.

Tell me about it! I received the following information from the Garmin
dealer in NZ, which I think is the most accurate (although disappointing)
information available: (NZ pricing)
MY QUESTION:

>program?
>Garmin.com only has updates and these rely on already owning the product.
ANSWER:
The Mapsource programme is not free but can be purchased.
Can be ordered through your dealer.RRP is $179.00 icl GST Mike

I mentioned in a post above that some U.S. buyers have been able to get
a MapSource DVD with the preloaded mapping (it will install the
MapSource application too) if they call Garmin 1-800-800-1020 and ask
for it.
It looks like there is a disparity in policies between the U.S.
distributors and other distributors (Europe, AU, NZ, etc.). Maybe a
call or email to Garmin will help.
I wonder if the difference might not be that Garmin Garmin makes the
non-U.S. distributors pay a not inconsiderable sum for each copy of the
DVD. If thee guy in NZ gives you one, he might be out all his profit on
the sale of the GPS and also whatever profit he hoped to make on the DVD.
Whereas the folks in Olathe, KS, USA, are setting there at the
production point with stacks of the same DVDs and it only costs them the
production costs of one DVD (less than $1.00 I'd guess) to give one away
and make a customer happy.
Garmin really needs to work some of the wrinkles out of the differences
in these policies.

| One thing to check carefully is that if you were to buy one of these copies
of mapsource you still do not have a copy of the map needed to use most of
its features. This is because the Nuvis come with the maps preloaded and are
not supplied on disk.
So if you are considering buying mapsource, check with Garmin to see if they
will also give you a copy of the map on CD/dvd that your Nuvi uses. I gather
there is no way you can download the map from your Nuvi/

| I called and they are going to send me a DVD. Did not ask for a credit
card so I assume it's free.

It's good to hear that they are still doing that. Did they ask for you
unit's serial number and was there any discussion of the reasons?
I'd be glad to hear that they do it simply because people want to have
the mapping on their PCs also. I can't imagine anyone not wanting to
have it, especially after they use it once or twice. First you decide
to find a place or something and then it dawns on you that it is silly
to not transfer the info the GPS as a waypoint or route.
Jack
P.S.
Martin? Are you still here? Can you call toll free numbers in the U.S.
from NZ? It might be worth a call to Garmin, the U.S. toll free number
is 1-800-800-1020.
Maybe you can email me the info and I can make the call for you, you'll
have to email me some particulars first. I don't think there is any
fraud here, just a catch 22 in the way it all works. The guy that sent
Bob a North American DVD may be able to send out NZ DVD's also.

They did ask for serial number. No reason asked and none given.

I don't have it yet so I can't speculate but I suspect they limit
distribution because the maps on PCs have an intrinsic value beyond
what's in the nuvi. But they don't know how to sell it separately so
they dither.

afaik, It will not be possible for me to transfer it into the nuvi as a
waypoint or route. It will be interesting to play with it.
btw, the delivery time for this, 3-5 days, is less than the topo dvd I
ordered, 5-7 days, and paid money for. Go figure.

That's right, I forgot about the nuvis being for the unwashed masses who
do not know what waypoints and routes are.
But you're showing all the early symptoms of becoming GPS addicted. I'm
thinking it is only a matter of time before you buy another and better
Garmin. :> )
And then maybe you can use the software they send you on that. If it
has two unlocks you may be able to use the seconds for another GPS.

Regular customers get better service?
On free software they don't have to verify the credit card or wait for
the check to clear?
The world is getting smaller every day?

It's a little bit scary, isn't it. (But not surprising since I'm a map
person from way back. Worked on a survey crew in my teens.) Especially,
when the nuvi is considered the "better" Garmin.
I'm thinking about an eTrex for hiking, biking, and kayaking. Will the
topos that I am buying for the nuvi work on an etrex?

I'm guessing you bought United States Topo? If so, that will work with
the nuvi.
I have U.S. Topo too. Mine is about four years old, V3.02 by the
labels, and I think that is the version they are still selling. The
topography of the U.S. has not changed much since then so I guess it
will stay up to date for a long time.
There is a patch for U.S. Topo that should be run after you install it:
http://www.garmin.com/software/ Map...asemapPatch.exe
It says that the patch "Removed fragment of map template from northern
Minnesota area so that MapSource would not report an error when viewing
data in this area". Probably not a biggie if you don't use that area
but I applied it. As far as I can tell the patch fixes the installed
product so it should be run again for a new install.

Thanks for the patch, I'll put it on.
I've installed MapSource from the CD. What comes in the box is 4.09,
works better after upgrading to 6.11.6. Sheesh.
Finally, the topos work fine except... The program wants to see the CD
every time it grabs a chunk of detail. I fooled it by creating another
drive and giving that drive the same letter as the cd drive was. Sheesh
again. Feel like I'm back in DOS days with the app demanding IT's very
own floppy in the drive.
Which begs two questions: Is there a more elegant way to put the data on
my hard drive? If not, if I install it from some phony drive that's a
copy of the cd will it look there forever?

I forgot about that annoyance. I got around it by creating a temporary
folder named \dumpme off the root of the hard drive. Then I copied the
three CDs into the folder. Copy all files and folders from of all three
CDs. Then run setup.exe and do a full install and it won't bother you
again.
You should uninstall your present install first, before you do the
install from the hard drive. The uninstall may also remove MapSource
too, if it does it will put 4.09 back during the new install and you'll
have to update it to 6.11.6 again.

Jack, THanks. I had already put stuff in a drive to fool the program and
had thought about reinstalling from there. You confirmed it for me.
Reinstalled and it works like a charm.
