I assume that these are not proprietary and are documented somewhere.
Any help / links appreciated.

Interesting. Thanks. Is there a directory listing for
http://www.garmin.com/support/pdf/? How did you know that "iop_spec.pdf"
was there?

Pardon my naivte but I'm new to this stuff and the Garmin site is less
than intuitive to me.

I've had the site bookmarked for about 5 years, I was probably searching on
"garmin interface specification". Somewhere in the is group last night I
ran into a similar link to the Garmin site describing an SDK. I don't
recall who started that thread, but I just repeated search and recognized
the same page they described,
http://www.garmin.com/support/commProtocol.html

The zipfile described there includes what appears to be the same as
iop_spec.pdf, but under a different filename. I'm still using my trusty
GPS12 and my custom comm software after 9 years, so I don't often check for
updates- my 12 wouldn't understand them.

You might also find this helpful:

Once you start talking map-capable units though, that's someone else's area.

Thanks. A lot of info here. Will plow thru it. Much of it seems related
to communications protocol, I'm more interested in the data formats.
