Software for 60 CSx?
|

| Hi,
I am very new to GPS use so pardon my ignorance. I am looking to get
detailed topo maps of the NY area. (I'd like the whole US since I travel a
bit, but will settle for NY for now.)
I have both ArcMap & Terrain Navigator at work, but am told maps made in
either of them cannot be imported to the GPS unit. Why not? Is it really
just the cynical reason I come up with- that Garmin just wants to make top
dollar making us buy maps from them?
I've gotten a bit of stick shock when I've seen Garmin's map pricing. Is it
legal to download maps? If so, where can I get them? Would "torrents" work?
Somebody at work told me to download them via torrents. I have no idea what
the ____ a torrent is...
I've got a 60 CSx unit. A friend had older software for an E-Trex. Didn't
work for me.
Any help is MUCH appreciated. Thanks.

Wow that looks like a lot of work and very complicated. Has anybody who has
already done this made their maps available online?

Here is one example:
http://gpssledmaps.com/guide/
and here is an example of maps that can be made with better software,
more data, and much more work:
http://www.aracnet.com/~seagull/ORTopo/

I got stuck on this step, I see no way to open a .sav file
Double-click dem2topo.sav to start the program, the IDL VM application will
automatically start.

Did you download the IDL VM thing too? When you have the two unzipped
and installed, double clicking the *.sav file starts the dem2topo
application.
I only messed with that a little once. You might to get onto one of the
map making forums to get some knowledgeable help with that.
I produced a sort of half-assed map just messing with that. I uploaded
it and it worked but I need to learn a lot more about all of it to
really do anything constructive.

| Thanks to all.
But yeah, that does seem a little complex for me. I think I might just bite
the bullet & buy the darn maps. I'll curse Garmin several hundred times
though.
