| My 2720 came with City Nav No Am NT v7 and I have installed the latest NT
v8. When I turned my unit on today a message came up saying there was an
update version of my maps. I thought v8 was it. When I looked at the Map
Detail on the unit, it shows (1) City Nav No Am NT v7 and (2) City Nav No Am
NT v8. I thought the v7 would have been over written when I installed v8.
Does the unit have both versions installed??

It would help if you guy spend few minutes a day to read some text =
message
how to get the max out of the expensive toy <bg> Here, I don't even own =
the
newer model than the dead old StreetPilot III and only have 128MB memory
card to store a very small part of the whole map.
But I read enough, and just yesterday (or earlier today) someone =
answered
the similar question saying that some model's (can't remember the model) =
and
one to my message about the GPS without external memory supported saying
that multiple version can be installed *but* one must be disabled etc.. =
And
I believe it means that the GPS has option to enable/disable some map.
I have 3 old Garmin GPS and I know the first 2 older have option to
enable/disabled the installed map, but I didn't see any on the newer
StreetPilot III (I didn't pay much attention to it).

Unfortunately, the manual that comes with the 2720 doesn't really cover the
process.
It's my understanding that the NT version of CN NA has a routine that will
upgrade the maps on a 2720 when loading from the CD. Apparently, if you load
the maps from your PC using maps installed on the PC, it adds instead of
replaces. I load part of CN Europe using maps stored on the PC to supplement
the CN NA preloaded on the 2720.
I was confused when I first got the 2720 because I couldn't find this in the
manual, so I called Garmin, and this is my understanding of what I was told. I
also suggested that this could be better covered in the manual. Perhaps this
has been done since my call was made several months ago.
If anyone has actual experience with this process, I'm sure we'd all
appreciate hearing from you.

Was that installed from an update DVD, as described here:
http://www.garmin.com/unlock/update.jsp
Or did you purchase a retail version of CN NA NT V8 and install from that?
If you did the latter, Garmin says on the CN NA NT V8 product page that
it cannot be used to update preloaded units:
http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/citynav.jsp
But at any rate, if you purchased V8, installed it to your PC, then
uploaded a map to the GPS, the map you uploaded would be a supplemental
map. That map would be in a different file than the preloaded map and
could account for your having two map files.
So my guess is that you have two map files on your unit, one for the
original V7 and a supplemental map of V8. I'm guessing, but I think
that is what you are seeing.
If you can uncheck the box for V7 on the Map > Settings > Detail Maps
page that map will simply be ignored and you'll be using the V8 maps.
You might want to call Garmin tech support 1-800-800-1020 and see if
they will consider sending you an update DVD for preloaded GPS receivers
(that is described at the first link above). You would normally be
expected to pay $75 for the V7 to V8 update DVD but maybe they can do
something to help you out since you purchased V8 by accident. Now that
you have unlocked and used that V8 DVD I don't think you can undo the
unlock.
If Garmin is going to help you update the V7 map file to V8, you might
also want to ask them how to go about deleting the supplemental V8 map
file that you have apparently uploaded. That file will be using up
about 970 mb of space. Worst case, if you can't delete it you can
upload a small file to recover most of the space.
I have a 2610. As far as I know there is no way to view the files in
the flash memory on a 2720 and selectively delete map files. That does
not have a Mass Storage Mode or show up as a Removable Drive in windows
Explorer when you have it connected to the USB port does it?
My 2610 stores the supplemental maps on a CF card and those files can be
seen with the card in a card reader. The supplemental map file is in
the \garmin folder and is named gmapsupp.img, that is the only name that
will work.

| I think the replies already made in this thread have put you on the right
track. I went through this and it was very painful until I figured it out.
I'm pretty sure you cannot use the CD to upgrade pre-loaded units;
installing from the CD will not overwrite the existing maps, so that would
explain why you have mapas from both versions. I think there's a notation
to that effect on the CD or somewhere in the instructions. As I recall and
as noted elsewhere in this thread, the manual is silent on performing the
update process. I like Garmin products but their manuals leave a lot to be
desired!
To update the 2720, or presumably any pre-loaded Garmin unit you must
connect to the Garmin update web site while your 2720 is connected to your
PC and login to your "MyGarmin" account. The process recognizes your unit
(it might reauest your unlock code from the little orange card shipped with
the 2720, or it may read the unlock code directly from the pre-loaded unit,
don't remember), and then proceeds to download the new files to replace v7
with v8. As I recall, the process took quite a while, maybe more than 40
minutes using a wireless 54mbps connection and a moderately slow laptop, but
completed without a problem. I'm not sure how you'd do this without a
high-speed internet connection.

To erase the preloaded ntv7 to ntv8 you have to do it with the ntv8
UPDATE dvd and make sureyou have plenty of room in your supplement map
section or you might not have enough room to load ntv8 as it is larger
then ntv7.

It would be best to get your unlock code first and install it in
MapSource so you will already have it when update dvd reaches the
point where it loads it to the 2720.
