Author Tracks FROM Datacrad to internal em,ory? GPSMAP 60cx

Quick question?!?

Just received my GPSMAP 60cs <Cheer!!>
Have 2GB micro sd card added.
I know I can transfer appropriate MAPS to the sd card and use them with the
unit...
BUT
Can I transfer TRACKS to the SD card (from my computer to the card
specifically) and use them in the unit? (trackback etc?).
I note the Manual for Mapsource says :- "you can transfer waypoints, routes,
and tracks from a data card to your GPS unit's internal memory...." page 13
under transferring Mapsource data.
Anyone know if this is possible with the 60CX?? <and how?>

I know about the option to copy a track TO the data card but not the other
way around.

Thanks all
Tack

The Tracks menu allows you to list the saved tracks and view then
"Tracback" them. It looks at the card; at least mine does the way it's
set up.

No, unfortunately the software on the handhelds has no user controlled
utility for saving data to or loading it from the microSD card.

I'd really like to see Garmin add a card utilities feature to the
software, it would allow you to back up and restore perishable data and
also travel with amounts of route and waypoint data that exceed the
maximum capacity.

The 60Cx will save *.gpx track files to the memory card as long as you
turn that feature on and there is free space on the card. But the *.gpx
files are of no further use from the handheld.

You're misreading that a little. It says "..between MapSource and a GPS
unit or a storage card...".

MapSource will do those things but, except for the *.gpx files saved to
the card by the handheld and the use of maps on the card, there are no
data transfers to and from the card from the handheld.

You can load a track into track memory on the 60Cx from MapSource. Up
to 10,000 points I guess (I've not done it). From that point you can
look at the track and, if you have track logging on and it has a fix, it
will start overwriting the points you just uploaded.

You can also save the track in track memory to a saved track. You are
allowed 20 saved tracks. Those track are limited to a maximum of 500
track points and the time and elevation is not saved. The 500 points
will be allocated to best represent the twists and turns of the track.
You have no control over how many trackpoints will be used and where
they will be located in the saved track.

You mean the check box for logging trackpoints to a *.gpx file on the
microSD card, right? That is the only way. There is no way to get a
track from the card back to track memory in the GPS except via MapSource
as I described above.

The section in the manual on pages 43-45 about Transferring MapSource
Data is a little old and may not be correct any more. It was written to
apply to some older GPS models and for using the proprietary Garmin Data
Cards.

As it describes it, the cards are either selectively or completely
erased when a new transfer is made. That refers to transfers made using
the Garmin USB Data Card Programmer (and using older versions of
MapSource?). I don't think it is correct as far as MapSource
interactions with CF, SD, and microSD card as they are seen in the Mass
Storage Mode and/or as Removable Drives in Windows Explorer when
connected to a PC.

I wonder if there is a newer MapSource manual I should be looking at?
Or if maybe is I need to quit looking at the one I have. It is dated
12/30/2003 in the document summary.

The saved tracks are in main memory, not on the microSD card, as far as
I can tell. There are no files seen on the microSD card when you have
saved tracks.

I don't know why your GPS is so different from mine, Jack, but I just
saved my track log on the gps (60CSx), uploaded that to Mapsource,
renamed it in Mapsource to "My Track", then re-uploaded it to the GPS
and it shows up as "My Track" in my "Tracks" menu, and it allows me to
select it, and one of the things I can do then is "Tracback".

This is true - but it doesn't really matter as long as the track can
be brought back to the gps and used again. I just started the GPS in
mass storage mode and it shows lots of tracks from right back to
December, tracks I'd deleted in fact are still there, but not the "My
Track" I just uploaded.

Sorry Jack, I should have read your lengthy reply more carefully.
You're right, you can't send a track to the card then re-load that. I
was able to copy to the card but the only thing I could do from the
gps end after was delete it through "Data Card Setup".

There are two kinds of track data, saved tracks and track log files
(*.gpx files). What I was saying is that the Saved Tracks are stored in
the main memory of the GPS, not on the microSD card.

If you look at your microSD card either in a card reader or by using the
Mass Storage Mode you won't see a file or anything else named "My Track".

If you go to Setup from the Track page, then choose Data Card Setup,
then check the Log Track To Data Card box the GPS will start saving
*.gpx files to the data card. And from the Data Card Setup menu, you'll
see a list of the the *.gpx files if any are on the card.

There is one file for each day, it is named yyyymmdd.gpx, and you won't
see the first *.gpx file until a new day occurs. I think that if you
exceed the 10,000 trackpoint capacity during a day, it will write the
file earlier in the day but I'm not sure.

When you download tracks from MapSource it will not download the *.gpx
files, only the saved tracks and whatever is in the track memory. But
you can open the *.gpx files from MapSource with the GPS in Mass Storage
Mode or you can copy them to the hard drive and open them from there.

The *.gpx files have the date and time included in the track data, the
saved track don't have dates and times, only fixes and elevations (I was
wrong when I said earlier that the elevation was not included in saved
tracks).

It took me a while to figure out the track capabilities on the 60/76 "x"
series. If I have it all figured out yet.

To me the key difference to me is that the saved tracks not have the
date/time data all the track points. Once I got the track log on the
data collection settings right everything was fine as getting the data I
like or want.

It is a wonderful unit, very capable, it just takes some time to figure
it all out.
