60 CX - some questions after a few days....
|
|
|
| Hi all,
Been 'playing' with my 60cx for a few days and the following questions have
arisen - nothing I can see on the web or in the "manual". Hope you can
help...
1) Velocity and distance covered - are these horizontal or "real" - i.e. if
going up a hill is the distance travelled the same as "your tyres" or is it
the horizontal (level) distance travelled - the same for speed - horizontal
or angular?
2) I see a blue circle around my position indicator on the map page. it has
a radius of about 20-25 meters ( my unit accuracy at THAT time is +/- 7m ).
It scales with zoom in and out and SEEMS fixed in diameter - i.e. not
visible when the map is scaled out to >120m ( on the scale bottom left
screen) and disappears (off screen -) when I zoom in to 5 meters. Initially
I thought it may represent a zone of "confusion" with respect to my
position - but it seems static in size - no matter what the accuracy comes
in at.... Any ideas?
I am sure more will arise! :-)
Thanks for your time and help

For most GPS devices, and I believe this includes the 60cx, the
indicated distances and velocities are the horizontal projections.
Note that in almost all cases this makes a rather insignificant
difference when walking, skiing, cycling, driving, etc. since the
slopes aren't really all that steep. It will make a difference when
climbing rock cliffs or skydiving.

Yes, it does indicate the "zone of confusion" but note that this
includes inaccuracies in the displayed map as well as inaccuracies in
the GPS lat/long position. In many cases the map inaccuracy is the
dominant factor and therefore the size is nearly constant despite
changes in the GPS accuracy figure. Note that changing the map (say
from the basemap to one of the more detailed MapSource products) will
change the size of the circle.
