| Garmin sent me the CD of City Navigator NT North America v8 when I requested it.
BTW, I have a c330. I created a map set using MapSource and sent it to the c330
with a new 512mb card inserted. It went through the motions, "Sending map set"
then "The data was successfully sent".
I have no idea how to get the GPS to 'read' the SD card. The only file on the
card is J:/GARMIN/gmapsupp.img. It's my understanding that the file should be
*.gbd.
However, when I save the map set to my computer from MapSource, the file is
*.gbd. I copied this file to the SD card but the GPS still will NOT (apparently)
recognize it. I'm beat. Any ideas?

The gmapsupp.img file is the supplemental or detail map that was
uploaded from MapSource. MapSource goes through some hoops and turns
the maps you had selected (from as many MapSource mapping products as
you may have installed) into that one map image file.

The *.gdb files (Garmin data base?) are used to save all the selections
you made in MapSource. It does not do anything for you except on the PC
and in MapSource.
If you save your MapSource map selections to a *.gdb file you can open
that file later and see all the same maps selected. It is a good
starting point for knowing what maps are in the gmapsupp.img file on
your GPS now and can be used as a starting point for changing your
selected maps or creating a new/different gmapsupp.img file on the GPS.
The new/different map, when uploaded to the GPS, will overwrite the
gmapsupp.img file that is there.
You can copy the gmapsupp.img files to your PC and save them for later
use (with the same GPS receiver if it is a unlocked product). It is
faster to copy a saved gmapsupp.img file back to a GPS than it is to
create it from scratch and upload it again.
Run two or more instances of MapSource to copy waypoint, routes, and
maps from one *.gdb file to another. Having *.gdb files saved with your
preferred selections for each of your MapSource products (CN, Topo,
BlueNav, WorldMap, etc.) is a good idea. You can open each of them in a
separate instance of MapSource and then SELECT, copy, and paste some or
all the maps into another empty MapSource window to create a new
selection of maps to upload.

And I forgot to mention, I think there should be a Map Setup or Map
Preferences (or something like that) menu on your nuvi. That menu
should list all the maps (by product name) that are found on the nuvi
and should also have check boxes that will let you turn them products on
and off.
If you nuvi had CN NA NT V8 preloaded, and you uploaded a CN NA NT V8
supplemental map, you should see two City Navigator maps listed on the
map selection menu.
If the supplemental map covers the same area, you won't see any
difference in the mapping on the GPS. If you uploaded a smaller
supplemental map and turned the preloaded maps off, you'll be able to
see the area covered for detail maps small squares on the map when
zoomed out. Once you get outside that area it will only use the roads
on the base map for route calculations.

Jack, I don't have a Nuvi. It is a c330. Nowhere, that I can find, is there
any way to select the new SD map, or "turn off" the pre-loaded map that came
with it.

I thought it was there. Check page 17 on your manual. It implies that
if you touch "the wrench" then the map, then the Map Info tab at the
bottom, the setting I am talking about might be there.
I don't have/haven't had/probably never will have any hands on
experience with the "c" series.
Let me know if that is or is not there, we'll all be older and smarter...

I have a c330, and I don't have a SD card inserted. There is only the
"City Navigator North America NT v8" on the screen and only one button,
"OK" at the bottom. Again, I have no SD card inserted.

Okay, those would be the preloaded maps. Maybe with the SD card in and
maps on it, the other maps and the check boxes will show up there.
If it will recognize a supplemental map they pretty much have to give
you a way to turn the various maps on and off because there is a
hierarchy for the maps and you normally cannot see some maps if others
re on too. For example, you can't see U.S. Topo maps with City
Navigator maps on. At least that is how it works on my 76Cx and 2610.

I still haven't gotten off my butt and called Garmin yet to see if they
will send me a CD/DVD of the CNNA so I can put it on my laptop. When I
do, I'll see what happens when you do try to use maps on a SD card.

I called this morning and was told they would send a DVD as soon as
they got some in (out of stock but should have stock inside of a
week).
He did not ask for a serial #, just name and address. Also told me I
would have to use the unlock code that came with the Nuvi 660.
This is my first GPS and I am impressed. Turned it on out of the box
in the house and in about 20 seconds I knew exactly where I was. :)

I just got off the phone with Garmin, and my DVD is "in the mail"! I had
the same experience as you. I was also mildly surprised that the young
lady with whom I spoke used English as her first language. I mention
this because I just had a round with Hughes tech support on Sunday, and
the tech I was connected to did not speak English as her first language,
in spite of her made up "Americanized" name.

Save the file as this link and try it:
http://www.vom.com/harolde/Map/gmapsupp.img
That is a small (950kb) topo map from U.S. Topo East. It covers Mount
Desert Island and a bit of the surrounding mainland. Look for the map
on the coast due east of Bangor, Maine, in the vicinity of N44 degrees
20 minutes, W68 degrees 15 minutes.
You want to copy that into a \garmin folder off the root of the SD card.

Ok Jack, here's the skinny. I went through the motions once again. MapSource
presents a window that says "Sending to Street Pilot c330 software Version 5.30"
Then below that, after building the map:
"Sending map set....."
Screen on GPS changes back to the Blue Garmin statup screen (before) the
disclaimer) and on that screen it says "Transferring Data"
Now then, when I touch the wrench/map/map info, it simply tells me that I have
City Navigator North America NT v8.
Kinda a long winded answer to your question, but the answer is, there is only
ONE map listed.
Thanks

Okay, it sure sounds like the c330 doesn't do supplemental maps then.
If you want to take one last shot at it, copy the topo map file from the
link in my earlier post to a \garmin folder on the SD card and see if
that does not show up too. That file worked when someone else tried it
their nuvi recently.
And a call to Garmin at 1 800 800 1020 might nail it down too.

Going back to the manual, if you look at page 27, "Using an SD card" it looks to
me that it 'should' work. I will call Garmin in the next couple of days and see
what they've got to say.
Thanks for trying to help.

Well I guess it is conclusive then, the C330 won't use any supplemental
maps.

In the manual, I can't get to it right now, it says in the section on SD
cards, you have to follow the installation instructions that come with a
PRELOADED SD card. The stop there and provide no further instructions.
With the POI loader, I can get my 330 to directly upload POIs, but I
can't get it to recognize POIs on the SD card. Nor can I get it to see
Jack's map file either.

I see what you mean, but I'm not convinced that this can't be done. I'm calling
Garmin soon.[color=darkred]
You can NOT put POi's on the SD card. That's documented. However, you can
upload POi's and they show up under "Where to? / My locations / Custom POi's.
I've got many that I work with.

I can get to the POIs loaded directly. I didn't read the documentation
with the Uploader, so I guess I missed that part.
If you find out the way to get the 330 to see the maps on and SD card,
please post it. Thanks.
