Am considering the 2620 (I know it is no longer in production) but am
wondering about map updates. Can a person download updated map data and then
upload to the 2620?

Would appreciate any information - pro or con concerning the 2620. Thank
You.

No you have to order a update from Garmin and pay 75$ fore it.

I would not buy a 2620, but a 2610 or a 2650 and then get a 2gb cf flash ram
for it, and then download it all.
it is a better working unit with mutch fewer hardware errors, and you will
get the map programe Mapsource.

I don't own Garmin 2620 to know small detail about it, but there is NO
download updated Map data for all Garmin GPSes. Whatever the 2620 is we
have several general choices

- *If* the unit accept external memory then you can upgrade to newer Map
Data (usually around $75 a pop) and copy to the external memory card.

- If it's pre-loaded map without external memory then you can't upgrade =
the
Map Data.

May be the internal memory is large enough and have option to replace =
the
additional map then you may be able to load newer Map data to it. But =
this
I have no idea

Pro - I know it's newer than my old Garmin III, Garmin IV, and Garmin
StreetPilot III Deluxe

Con - the more Garmin pumps newer models to market the more confusing I =
am.
Too confusing to upgrade my old model.

You can buy updates to the new releases of the mapping data the 2610 and
2620 come with. It will cost you about $75 to update from City
Navigator V7 to V8 for example.

Garmin does not give away updated map data in any way, shape, or form as
far as I know.

The 2620's are a little prone to having microdrive failures (they have a
small internal hard drive). Saying that, I have had one for a few
months, used it in the car, and have had no problems. The 2620 I have
is on it second life, it's failed once in the past and Garmin replaced
it for me under warranty.

But I also have a 2610. I use that on my motorcycle and actually prefer
that over the 2620 because I don't have to worry about the hard drive
dying unexpectedly and I have more options on the mapping I can use on it.

The 2610's have established quite a long history of being reliable and
long lived under pretty rough conditions on trucks, motorcycles, and
various off road vehicles.

The 2610's store the maps on a CF card and I can change cards when I
want. So with the 2610 I can carry both City Navigator and U.S. Topo
mapping by putting the Eastern half of the U.S. on one 2 GB card and the
Western half on a second card. It only takes a about 15 seconds to
shift from City Navigator to U.S. Topo mapping.

All things considered, if I were going to buy a 26xx StreetPilot I'd buy
the 2610 as less troublesome in use and more versatile.

For some bizarre reason, the dealers selling the refurbished 2620's
usually want more for those than they do for the 2610.

Thanks to all for the info on SA2620. I use DeLorme Street Atlas in the
motorhome and am quite pleased with it, but the laptop is too awkward to use
in the car. So...... now am more undecided than ever. There are so many
choices out there.
