How does the unit (Nuvi 350 in this case) know what speed to set the
alert for a poi?

Have a look at the sample POIs on the Garmin site - open them in Excel
and you will see how the speed warning is set

David,

Could I impose on you to point me to said sample POIs on the Garmin
site? I've spent considerable time searching and can't find them.
Garmin's web site is poorly organized, imho.

Or, could you just tell me how it's set? I've looked at a number of POI
files and the only thing I see is that it might be set by the file name.

Thanks... Bob

Hi Bob

Yep the speed is set in the name as you will see if you open the file in
Excel

goto

www.garmin.com.au

click on Nuvi 660 street navigator

click on custom POIs

click on sample POI files and follow the trail to download the speed camera
POIs

open the file you downloaded in Excel

Note the POIs are the same for the 660 and the 310/350 Nuvi

Hope this helps

David

You can also set the default speed in the file name. This is from the
help file in POILoader:

Speed information can be included in the file name or in the names of
individual POIs within the file.
POI Loader determines speed information based on the following
information, listed from highest to lowest priority:

1. Speed information included in the name of the individual Custom
POI. For example, a POI named "SpeedZone@30" will have an alert speed
of 30 regardless of the speed information specified in Manual mode or
in the file name.

2. Speed information entered in Manual mode.

3. Speed information included in the file name. POI Loader interprets
any numbers in the file name as speed information.

Don't bother with samples when you can probably get useful ones
instead. And the best site for free POIs is http://gpspassion.com in
my opinion...

Just had a look at GPSPassion and felt it was not too clear where to
find the custom POIs so here's a couple of hints:

The forums are where the POI files reside; assuming you were looking
for USA POIs you'd go here: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/...t.asp?CAT_ID=20

And here's a link to Nuvi specific forums:

Use the POI Loader (BETA) and in manual mode, you can set the speed
you want versus having the speed included in the file

As previously mentioned, POILoader works this way:

POI Loader determines speed information based on the following
information, listed from highest to lowest priority:

1. Speed information included in the name of the individual
Custom
POI. For example, a POI named "SpeedZone@30" will have an alert speed
of 30 regardless of the speed information specified in Manual mode or
in the file name.

2. Speed information entered in Manual mode.

3. Speed information included in the file name. POI Loader
interprets
any numbers in the file name as speed information.

----------------------

So if the custom POI has speed information in its name, the manual
mode setting you make is still secondary and overridden by the name
setting.

Download POI Loader from Garmin's site.
Read the documentation.
