| Is it possible to put city navigator V8 on your hard drive
and view it as you would programs such as street atlas?
This assumes you have the legal gps and cd.

Yes. It comes on a DVD, when you put that in a PC it will install an
application named MapSource and then install the maps from CN NA V8.
MapSource hosts any and all Garmin MapSource mapping products (topo,
marine, roads, etc.) you may have and you can shift your viewing from to
another in MapSource.

| For those who have purchased preloaded products, like the c530 or
c550, how can we use MapSource?
I've downloaded and installed the latest version of MapSource, but it
complains at startup that it hasn't found an installed MapSource map
product... though I do have my c550 plugged into my PC and it shows up
as a mounted drive.

Two comments, from another new user (c530).
1. When you connect the unit, can you click on "Receive from device", and then
check "maps". Is this where it says that it hasn't found any map product? I
haven't done this myself, because --
2. When I got my c530 I downloaded MapSource and installed it. I then called
Garmin on the "help" line and asked why I didn't get the DVD with the maps. I
was told that it wasn't distributed with the pre-loaded units, but that if I
wanted it they would send a copy, at no charge. Shortly after I received a
copy, not a production disc, but one that had been individually burned, and
labeled in pen!
I don't know exactly what happened, but the disc worked with no hitches (or
glitches). So, try calling and see what happens.

That's interesting. It used to be that you had to buy an optional
MapSource mapping product to get MapSource installed. Then you could
download updates to keep it up to date. But you couldn't install
MapSource from the updates, it had to already be installed.
But now you can install it from the downloaded update without already
having a MapSource install?
Call Garmin at 1 800 800 1020 and tell them you'd like to have mapping
that is on you c550 on your PC. They will probably offer to send you a
City Navigator DVD for free. At least that is the way they have been
handling it.

Update page still says "WARNING: This software will not work unless
you already own a MapSource product."

It's normal and it has been going on for years. Why?
- Because the MAP data is not a program but MAP data can only be read by
MapSource *main* program.
- Or just like Windows application can't be operated by itself without
Windows as OS (Operator System). Or Mac application can't operate by itself
without Mac OS.
- Or in order to run the Mapsourse Data Map on PC system you will need
1. Windows
2. MapSource (main)
3. MapSource DATA Map (like MetroGuide, City Navigator, City Select etc.)
