How effective is this antenna? Will it help reception in wooded areas?
How practical used when hiking?
Many thanks.

Give a good sky view, it will improve the sensitivity. People in the
past have mounted them on the top of hats and on backpacks.

I've found my 76Cx to be much more capable of maintaining a 3D fix in
the woods than the previous (non SiRF III) GPS receivers I've owned.
Even when there was very little open sky visible.

You might want to give it a try before you buy the internal antenna, it
might do good enough without it.

Many thanks, Jack. I'll give that a try.

The chipset used is recognised as the best available for reception on hand
units. That range of units (the GPSmap 60) is designed especially for
hiking. The unit sells extremely well and has many fans. There are
plenty of reviews on the web.

Thanks Simon.
I meant to have asked how practical it is to use the antenna with the
60Cx when hiking. I have the unit already and find it gives good
results. I would like to know by how much reception is enhanced using
the antenna.

None at all, the GPS won't know where it is if it has two antennas
giving it different locations.

Erm, the 60CSx has a connector for an external antenna, so obviously
it was built for using one. That may be done by simply not using
the internal one when an external antenna is connected, but either
way, if the external antenna is better or has better reception than
the built in one, it should get better results. That's the whole
idea of having the connector.

Of course, if the external antenna is no better than the built in
one (or the built in one is the best there is), the only way an
external one will improve reception is if the internal one
is in a place with poor reception.

Whenever you connect an external antenna the internal antenna is
disconnected so the external antenna will be the only one working with
the chipset built in the unit so the unit definitely will know where
it is.

The 60cx is designed for use with an active external antenna. When
one is connected, the unit senses the power consumption by the
external antenna and disconnects the internal one automatically.
Position calculations are then based on the location of the external
antenna.

If the internal antenna is located where it has a good view of the sky
then there isn't any real advantage to using the external antenna.
But I frequently find it convenient to put my GPS in my pocket or
other spot where reception is blocked by portions of my body. I sewed
a small pocket inside the top of my hiking cap and place the external
Gilsson antenna there so it has the best 'sky view' regardless of
where I locate the GPS itself.

Thanks for that. However, I can't find the GPSmap 60 Cx listed on the
Gillson site. Would the appropriate antenna for another model be
compatible?7

Yes, any antenna they list for Garmin models which has an MCX
connector will work fine with the 60cx.
Note that they list better prices at their eBay store site than on
their own direct website. Mention the eBay site to get the lower
prices:

Here is a link to the Gilsson (GPSGeek) eBay page with the antenna you need.
Scroll down to see all the units it is compatible with.
