I found a map of Japan on:
http://rwsmaps.griffel.se/
You'll find a map of Japan in the middle of the page. It doesn't cover
the whole of Japan.
There is also a map of Japan on:
http://uud.info/en/

Why is that? Garmin is Taiwan based yet they seem to be limited to maps
for Asia. One would think the maps in Asia, like in Japan, Taiwan, and
Hong Kong would be great.

Garmin is not Taiwan based. They have a manufacturing plant in Taiwan
but it is not the design center and besides Garmin is not in the map
researching business. They create maps from other sources, primarily
NavTeq these days so you assumptions are not correct.

Right, but Navteq has maps of virtually every place in the world. My
point is that Garmin for some reason doesn't supply a many maps of Asia.
Yet, if you go to Asia, you will see lots of [different] companies using
Navteq maps on various units. Garmin is not one of them.

There are a number of third party map vendors listed on Garmin's site
but last time I looked there wasn't one for Japan. However, I have a
son and daughter-in-law in Japan so had an interest in obtaining maps
for my GPS. I contacted Garmin support back in '04 and was told that
they didn't directly offer anything better than World Map however, while
they could not offer any support or warantee as to the quality, there
was a free one available from
http://www011.upp.so-net.ne.jp/mametaro/index-e.html
I downloaded this and seems very good. While I haven't been to Japan
(yet), my son also downloaded it and had no problem loading it into his
GPS. He has found it quite useful.

Really. Are you sure they are NavTeq maps?

I am SHOCKED!! I assumed Navteq had a map of Japan and even Hong Kong.
Thailand IS listed though.
