I have had this to happen with my 76Cx under one circumstance. One of my
Garmin apps loaded a utility called gStart which pops up when my unit is
connected to the USB port. If I cancel the app while the welcome screen is
still on the GPS it will fade to 'Off' as you describe, but if I let it get
past the welcome screen and on to the satellite page everything works
normally. It (the GPS) is being powered by USB because the display is
backlighted when it first comes on. I also have fresh batteries.
