I had a similar problem a couple of years ago when the only solution seemed
to be to get something other than Garmin, which I didn't want, or to get a
PC. I bought a cheap(ish) laptop which I now use almost exclusively for
Mapsource. As someone pointed out, you can get a used PC these days for next
to nothing (my local school was giving them away to charity recently).
Mapsource runs quite well if it's the only application you have, and contrary
to popular belief, Windows doesn't really send you blind or mad, it just
makes you very thankful you don't have to use it all the time ;-)
If you really don't want to get your fingers dirty on a PC (and you have a
modern Mac) you can get Boot Camp and run Windows natively on your Mac.
