GPS Elevation/Altitude on GPSMap 76CSx

Has anyone ever gotten an explanation from Garmin of why they do not
make this data field available to select as a continuously displayable
item on this (and I assume the 60CSx) model?
Is there any chance that lobbying with Garmin, by email perhaps, will
cause them to correct this perceived flaw in their offering of an
otherwise ideal model?

Donīt expect Garmin to make any major enhencements - not even on a fairly
new gps.
Donīt expect Garmin to have updated maps - compare www.navteq.com maps with
Garmins - they are way behind.
Buy something else.

No.

I would hardly call adding to the display list a number already
available internally in the unit a "major" enhancement. I suspect
leaving it off the list was more of an oversight than a required
compromise.

No thanks - I still prefer the 76CSx. I can always get the gps
altitude one shot at a time in another display (not continuous), and I
think it is always available in the data output if I navigate by PC.
There's gotta be a LOT of value in tracking yourself with a gps that
works inside your pocket or pack, without having to resort to wearing
an antenna beanie, whatever.

I take it you are unhappy for some reason with Garmin and/or Garmin
products. Makes me wonder why you bother to read this newsgroup.
I on the other hand have found their email support to be consistently
effective and responsive, albeit one does need the patience to wait a
couple of days per answer, and one does need to know the right way to
ask the questions.
I'd be willing to bet that if the right guy at Garmin got 40 or 50
emails from actual users asking for this, it would be in the next
software update.

You may well be correct, but apparently emails sent to the technical
and sales support addresses on Garmin's website are not getting to the
"right guy."
I've generally been pretty happy with Garmin's products and support,
but this issue (no updated display of GPS altitude) was identified
quickly when their first units with barometric sensors came out around
7 years ago (the eTrex Summit and b&w Vista). There have been
numerous discussions and complaints raised about it in the past yet no
firmware fix has been forthcoming - not even when Garmin introduced
new models like the 76S, 60/76CS, and 60/76CSx.

I had a 2610 and upgraded to a 2820 expecting it to be able to do at least
the same and being enhanced on some points which was not the case - in
certain areas functions had been removed and the menu system is not logical
at all if you compare it to the 2610.
For example Sun up and down times has been erased. Why? I use it for setting
my alarm clock when driving long way from home, prefering to drive when its
light so I can enjoy the scenery. Couldnīt take up much time to keep that in
a high priced model.
Another example is no SIRF III.
I am sure there are more examples but I just donīt bother with Garmin
anymore. I know other brands that use more updated map material!
BTW - I waited 3-3― month on a free update of the map. Customer Service and
Garmin just donīt rhime!

I might add that I'd also like to be able to turn the barometric
elevation off so that the GPS elevation would be stored in the
track log and waypoints (without having to go to averaging).
Even though the 76S has an Altimeter "off" setting, it doesn't
really turn it off. All it stops is the vertical trip computer
values.
I just ordered a 76Cx and not a 76CSx because of this. So
Garmin lost any additional profit on a 76CSx.

============
I had only ever used survey quality gps until last year, then I bought
my first handheld consumer model.
Garmin had a $100 rebate on the 76csx, and it had all the tits and
knobs on it, so I bought one.
I really wish I had not bothered with the sensors. All I wanted was
the compass. That barometric pressure business is all just one big
PITA.
It's like you'd only ever want to do skydiving with it, AND NOTHING
ELSE. Like, you need to find your way back to EARTH???
What were they thinking about at Garmin when they did not give you a
choice between gps elevation and that whatever-they-call-it using the
pressure sensor?
Lunch?
