| Is there a way to generically find 'Starbucks' and whenever I'm within "X"
miles of Starbucks I would be notified? Could be the same with Radio Shack,
or Hobby Shop.. ?? This would be cool!

Yes - it would be excellent!
I've seen a company selling them - but I wouldn't pay $30 for it. (over
9,000 Starbucks locations on it) Now - if I were that guy that is trying to
make a record by visiting every one in existance, it might be worth it.
That company is also "selling" POI lists for many other restaurants,
companies, etc - http://www.gps-poi-us.com/poifiles.html
I'd personally like to see a cheaper version though.

| Free - yes, but nearly every POI files contains less entries than from
the companies that sell the data. You get what you pay for.

There are 8881 Starbucks listed in the free POI file, and according to
ClevelandTech 9000 in the paid for version.
Big deal.

| Not sure what "paid file" is being referred to, but the file on the
site referenced above contains 9479 locations. 9000 9479, big deal to
some - but compared to 8881 in the free file, if those 598 locations
happen to be in areas you care about, that may be a big deal.
But the bigger difference is that the free file has the word
"Starbucks" and a one or two word name description of the location.
The file that you have to pay for includes the location name, the full
street address and the phone number.
That may or may not be a big deal, depending on your needs. But
customers should be at least informed about the differences between
paid files and free files to make their own decisions. What is
written in these forums in regards to POI files is usually only half
right.

| Let's see, I get 90% of them for free.. can't imagine all the ones NOT
included would be in MY area, maybe 1 or 2 - so what! ... and when Starbucks
pops up on my display in my Proximity Alert, I hit MAP and I know where it
is.. don't necessarily need the address that's one reason I have my new GPS.
Why make us pay for what we can get for free? For those providing Lat/Long
info to keep the files updated.. thanks from all of us.

| Last time I checked, this was America and no one can "make" you pay
for anything. You have made a decision that the paid file offers
nothing of value to you. Great. Don't buy it. No one is making you
pay for "what you can get for free" because what is being offered for
a fee is a different product than what you can get for free. You may
have made a personal decision that what is being offered is not of
enough value to justify the cost. Great. That is your decision.
In some cases, you don't just hit MAP and "know where it is."
Sometimes, unfortunately, it gets you close but not exactly there.
The street address allows you to look for an address number on
buildings to find the exact location. The phone number allows you to
call and find out what the hours are, etc. Again, that may be of no
value to you personally. That is completely fine.
But users should know the facts and differences in order to allow them
to decide for themselves which product better suits their needs.

| Free and 90% of the locations (more than likely more than 90%) or Pay and
get 98%.. these seem to be the facts. Stop pushing paying for data bases
that others create for free. I realize this is a personal issue for you, and
I'd feel the same way, but come on - do you need to make a buck on this? I
wonder if you would feel GREAT if you gave this to the small overall
population that wanted it - knowing you have done a nice deed? Perhaps not.
I used this data base for Starbucks - and I NEVER stop there (don't drink
coffee) - just to see how it worked - set the proximity alert for 10000 feet
(basically 2 miles) - and it went off all the time - all the time! Shows me
I'm not missing many in my area and if I do happen to miss one or two, the
next 5 miles will flag several others.

| I am not going to argue with you Scott. You made the statement that
people should give this data away for free. That is your opinion.
People don't create and give away free, the databases that others sell
as you claim. They aren't the same database. There are material
differences. YOU may not find value in those differences, that is
your opinion. Others may. You save your $30 and let others make
their own decisions based on their own value judgment.
"Do you need to make a buck on this?" Why else would someone create a
company that does nothing but sell POI files Scott? People don't form
most companies to "do a nice deed" and give their product away. It
takes money and thousands of hours of labor to develop these
databases. If you are fine with not having the most timely data, and
additional information like the street address and phone number,
cool. Use the free data. I am not here to convince you of anything.
Someone like you who admittedly doesn't frequent Starbucks is not the
target customer of a paid POI file. The Starbucks-fanatics that want
the most accurate data available is the target customer. Those are
the people that buy the file and thank you at the same time for
developing it.
