Another strange Garmin response to a software trouble report ...
|

| I dropped Garmin's tech support a line whining about how MapSource
causes ActiveSync to start up whenever I select "Send to" or
"Receive from device".
My exact words were:
Starting with some recent version of MapSource, Microsoft's
ActiveSync application (used to sync email, schedules, etc with
PDAs) starts up every time I select "Sent To ..." or "Receive
From ..." device. The GPSR doesn't have to be attached at the
time.
The reply included this phrase which caused my jaw to drop:
"I am not quite sure what you are referring to when you say
GPSR."
On reflection, I'm going to be extremely charitable and guess that he
meant he didn't know what model I was talking about, even though I was
explicit in saying that the receiver didn't even have to be connected to
demonstrate the problem.

No, but the response did include a suggested fix that's been standard
for software support since time immemorial:
Please move up to the latest level.
Heck, I've used that one myself :-)

Why didn't you refer to your GPS by model number? Why do you refer to it as
a GPSR? Do you have a GPST (Transmitter)? In my experience, the majority
of posters use GPS.

Because the problem doesn't involve the receiver at all; I mentioned the
receiver only in the context of saying that wasn't involved.

On re-reading your original post I see that your GPS was not involved. It
is now a moot point; that particular customer service rep. now knows what a
GPSR is and you know that not everyone is familiar with the designation.
Looks like a win-win..

It's a device that receives signals from the GPS, so the term 'GPSr' is
quite sensible and also widely used. I think that this is the first time
I've seen this queried.

Phew! I was about to ask. Glad I didn't do that!

I've only ever seen the GPSr term used in this group.

I subscribe to six GPS newsgroups, including this one, and have seen it
used in five of them.

OK; looks like I was wrong in assuming that the term "GPSR" was in wide
use and well understood in the proper context.
Still, within the context of GPS hardware, its meaning came across to me
pretty quickly and when talking to a Garmin tech support guy, it never
occurred to me he wouldn't get it.
