Author Displaying POIs, c330

I have my c330 set to show the map in 3d mode, set to "most detail".
Shouldn't this show me POI icons as I get near things? Or does it only
do that when browsing the map from "where to?"?

Regardless of map view mode, only waypoints listed in your 'favorites'
are shown on the map. Bummer I know....

So, forex, if I want it to let me know/remind me that there's a highway
rest stop up ahead, I'll have to load that rest stop as a favorite.

On the one hand, I can understand this. With several million pois
pre-programmed in and custom pois installable, the display could get
rather crowded alerting the user to every ATM, gas station and pizza
place in town.

On the other hand, it would be nice to be able to tell it to show me
where certain things are as I drive by without having to have it
entered as a favorite before hand. Like the message I saw (here, or
somewhere else) from someone who wanted their unit to let them know
when they're approaching a Starbucks, any Starbucks.

A normal Custom POI will not show up on any map view.

If you set up a Custom POI file with Proximity Alerts, it will tell
you ahead of time, within a specified distance, and I believe it will
give you an icon on the map view. Check the help files on the
POILoader program.

Here is a quote from the POILoader help file:

You can enter proximity alert distance for individual Custom POIs in
a .gpx file.
You can also enter proximity alert distance for all Custom POIs in a
data file using Manual mode.

Take a look at the help files. I used to play around with the alerts
as a challenge. I don't use them anymore.

While not quite what (Ithink) you want, the Nuvi feature "near" can be
used to list for you the preloaded POIs in the category you are interested
in

eg by using

where to - near - where I am now - food/lodging - food

you will get a list of food outlets that are near to where you are (same
thing if you had chosen fuel or something else) ordered by distance from
your current location

David - who wishes one could record ones own POIs by saving them under the
categories used by Nuvi

The StreetPilot c3xx does that too. I was asking about having the POIs
shown on the map as I drive.

That was going to be my next question... integrating custom/saved POIs
with the master list. One of the POI lists I downloaded from POI
Factory is "Classic Diners USA". I'd really like to integrate this
list into the master Food category.

Hi

Nuvi will show the POI you select in the screen -

eg on my Nuvi

where to - Food lodgings - fuel - Caltex Wagga Wagga (from list shown) - show
map. That sequence shows me a (part) map of Wagga with the Caltex Service
station shown on screen

To have ALL the fuel outlets (or takeaways etc etc) in town shown would make
the map unreadable
