POI use - for all...
|

| I have created my own POI's and downloaded many, thanks to the users here
(and elsewhere).. here's how I use the POI's.. I use POI loader, then set a
distance (Proximity) to the places, and I expect the Garmin GPS to flag me
when I get close to the POI. Is this the normal use? I am a bit confused I
think as to how the POI's are used if other than this.
Also, if you use a distance in your GPS, what is a typical distance? I have
15000 feet on some of my POI's, 1000 on Red Light POI's, and anywhere
in-between.. is this 'normal'?
Thanks for any advise.

Well, that's one use, I suppose... I loaded POIs from POI Factory with
the tolls in NH for that purpose, to alert me when I'm nearing the toll
(in case I zoned out and missed the signs). I'd like to find such POIs
for other states in the Northeast, specifically the rest of New
England, and New York.
You can also use them like any POI that's built-in for routing. You'll
find your custom uploaded POIs in your Favorites area. At least,
that's where they are on my StreetPilot c330.

I'd say whatever works for you. I set my toll booth proximity alerts
at 1000 feet to give me room to jockey for "toll position" and speed
when approaching at ~80mph. If I were concerned about red light
cameras, I'd set those much, much shorter, on the order of 50~100 feet,
since I'd be going a lot slower.

"If I am ever the Hero top 100 list: #94. If I discover that one of my
comrades in the Heroic Struggle has a Dark Secret (i.e., is passing as
the opposite gender, is a close relative of the Evil Overlord, etc.), I
will not dismiss them without further justification.

| Thanks for your thoughts. I am just looking for ways others use POI's.. and
your toll crossing is a great idea.

And it works! I loaded them this morning before heading into
Portsmouth for a couple errands, which takes me through a toll plaza,
if I chose to take the highway. I'm lousy at estimating distances, but
I presume the alert went off within 10 meters of my 1000 foot
designation, and it kept pinging the alert tone as long as my speed was
above the set alert speed on the approach, and a little beyond the
plaza.
