I saw a message recently on this ng, but can't find it again, about a
program to convert route & track data from one map program to another. Can
anyone please recommend program (preferably free) with which I can export
route & track data in text format into something that mapsource can read .

For free gpsbabel, for good and very versatile, GPS Utility. You can
choose from a bunch of them at the Third Party link from here:

Thank you. The one I had seen mentioned before was GPS Babel however it's
not the easiest program to use (well not for me anyway) so I was very
interested to hear about GPS Utility & also found the link to the
information side most helpful.

I'll give both GPS Babel & GPS Utility a try.

Don't let the registration fee on GPS Utility scare you off. I
registered it about 5 years ago and have been getting free and regular
updates ever since.

The developer, Alan Murphy, is a regular on these GPS newsgroups and the
GPSU Forum. I have never had a question go unanswered, usually by him
personally, and he has gone to some trouble for me several times on
hammering out the details of getting one conversion or another working
or in pounding some detail of into my thick head.

GPS Utility has a bit of a learning curve because of all the things it
will do. But it is not that steep. I have several gpsu.ini files saved
off so that I can quickly change all the configuration features to match
one need or GPS model.

Thanks Jack

In the end I've opted to use Quo maps by Mapyx a UK OS partner & they have
their own convert facility whereby I use their very detailed 1:25,000 maps
to plan my routes & then save the routes & waypoints as Mapsource files.

You guys in the Olde Country are luckier than we are as near as I can
tell. Garmin does not sell widespread 24K coverage (on selected are of
some national Parks) and their more or less affordable package that
covers the entire U.S. is 100K coverage.

The topo offerings for Britain seem to be better.
