I'm thinking of ordering the Garmin 2720 since the price has dropped
to $350 at Costco . I'm planning on using the beanbag mount; but I
have a question: Would it receive signals from sats if I placed it on
the flat spot between my gauges & steering wheel, even though the top
would be blocked by the dash overhang? Or does it have to have a clear
line of sight?

This may not help you, but I have a Nuvi 660, and sit it on the flat part of
the dash, and it's covered by the dash overhang (Toyota Avalon) and I
receive good strong signals from the sats all the time. I don't know if the
2720 has the new chip or not, but if it does, there should be no problem.

Thanks for the reply... I don't think it uses the SIRF chip, but it's
supposed to be a good performer, and the price is certainly right. I'm
just wondering if it'll need an unobstruced top view or not - as you
can tell I have almost no experience with GPS!

I don't know about the 2720, but recently when using my Nuvi in a
borrowed car (Ford Falcon) I found it worked fine when sitting on the
passenger seat

Just a suggestion - if you can visit the store why not just give it a try?

They don't have it my local Costco; in fact I think it's only at
Costco.com

Since Costco has a "no questions" return policy, I'd just give it a
shot. If you buy something on Costco.com, you return it to the local
warehouse (I've done it a couple of times). I have a 2720 in my Subaru
and it works fine for what it is worth.

I saw the same sale. I went to Costco and they said that it was a web-only
special. The price didn't look all that attractive after I added in shipping
and sales tax. I found it at Amazon for $399, with a $50 rebate, which
brought it down to $349 - and no shipping or sales tax. The rebate deal only
lasted until 4/9 though. I haven't checked back, but usually with these
things, when the promotion ends, they always seem to have an even better
promotion, so you might still get a good deal.

I found the beanbag mount works well. You really would have to do some
extreme driving to dislodge it from the dashboard. You have to make sure not
to put it on top of the passenger airbag. I suppose it's possible that it
might slide on top of the airbag in an accident before the airbag detonates,
and then your passenger could end up eating the GPS unit. The manual gives a
stern warning not to set it on the dashboard.

The status display shows it getting fewer and weaker satellite signals when
I set it on the console, but it seems to function OK. It hasn't gotten a lot
of use yet. I bought it for my wife, since she's the one who always goes to
strange places. I've only tried it out once. She prefers to turn it off and
leave it in the glove compartment because she doesn't like another woman
giving her orders while she's trying to listen to the radio. If it ever does
get regular use, I probably would use the adhesive dashboard mount. There's
no good place on the console in either car.

Not having the new chip set, and from what I have read, your are going to
need an un-obstructed view.

I saw the deal at Amazon - but to me it is worth the extra $39 it cost
me for Costco's return policy. I have ordered it and will try it
between the Dash & steering wheel, if it doesn't work out I'll
experiment a bit. Thanks for the good info!

Not necessarily, it is worth a try with the antenna it comes with.

I have a 2610 (similar patch style antenna if not the same one) and it
will get fixes in my basement, living room, and garage given some extra
time. If I roll the car out of the garage and turn it on I usually have
a fix in one minute or less, inside the garage may take 1-1/2 to 2
minutes.

More than a little reflected and low angle RF energy is detected and can
be used. That will affect the EPE some of course but the GPS is
working. When I have a fix and look at the EPE on the Sat page it is
usually around 20 feet or so with WAAS on. That's close enough for me.

I don't use the snap to road feature on any GPS receiver as I want to
see where it thinks I am, not where it thinks I should be.

I have an external antenna I can use with the 2610 but have not felt
compelled to use it yet. The 2720 will take an external antenna too and
with that the location of the 2720 would be a moot point.
