Still seems to be very sparse. Stopped altogether two versions of GTM12
firmware ago; Garmin very quickly released a fix for that. Now I get about
6 alerts showing rather than 200 or so.

Clues?

Reception is generally rubbish in the UK compared to the continent.
I've read about some people hooking up external aerials or hooking it
into their car aerial with varying degrees of success. Most say it is
quite successful.

It was working very well (once I got yhe PSU upgrade from Garmin). Since
the latest s/w upgrade it is almost dead (and I can't see how to go back a
version)....

Try asking on the forums on http://www.pocketgpsworld.com - they might
be able to suggest a way to downgrade it to some older firmware.
