Author HELP PLEASE -Garmin GPS MAP 76 Wont Power Up

I bought a Garmin GPS Map76 about four years ago, had it for about two
years and thought I had lost it (Please dont laugh) !!!

However I was tidying my caravan out last weekend and me across it. I
had left the Duracell batteries in, which hadnt leaked at all, so
there is no corrosion.

I fitted new batteries and it wont power up at all, even if I use the
12v car adaptor.

I have bought a new GPS Map76 to replace the one I thought I had lost,
but would like to see if I can get the old one to work.

Any ideas please (does this model have an internal battery, that may
have packed in and prevent me from powering up) ???

Many Thanks.

Rick.

You're not getting much help here. Sounds like it is time for a master
reset or something like that. More info on there here:

http://media.wiley.com/product_data.../0764584243.pdf

I would trying holding down the Enter and Page buttons while pressing
the Power key. You're on your own as far as the risk or results.
You'll lose all data if it is not gone already.

Another approach would be to call Garmin support at 1 800 800 1020 and
they can walk you through some trouble shooting on it. That is probably
long out of warranty and might not be worth the cost of the flat rate
service charge as far as sending it off for repair.

If the reset wakes it up, give it a long time with a good sky view (30
minutes or even an hour) and it may come back to life.

Good luck with that,

Jack

For $60? That's not too bad a deal. That had a MSRP of about $200 new
but I don't think you can buy anything as good or better for that kind
of money. The performance features on that pales a little in comparison
to some of the newer units but that is still a good GPS receiver.

I have no reservations at all about buying a refurbished Garmin product.
I have a 2610 that was purchased as a refurb and also a 2620 that was
received as a replacement for a broken unit. Neither of them could be
told from a new unit as I received them.

If you buy a refurbished unit it normally comes with all the normal
accessories and software that would be with a new retail unit. If you
send a unit in on a RMA for repair, they want you to send only the
receiver and that is all you'll receive back from them. I think they
seldom open and repair units, it pretty much normal to get a different
unit back for one sent in for repair.

Try leaving the new batteries in it for a day (to charge
a possible storage capacitor). Then see if it will start up.

The 76S has an internal battery also. When mine was under warranty, it
wouldn't turn on and Garmin replaced that battery. I had left the 76s
without batteries in it for a few months and I guess it drained the
little internal battery.
