Author Question about maps on GPS

I have a Vista CX and a friend has a 60CSX.
We both have Mapsource City Select loaded on the micro SD Cards.
My question; Is it possible to load City Select and Mapsource Topo on
the same card and switch back and forth between the two?

Thnak you!

Yes

But you need to install 25 digit unlock keys for both units in MapSource.
Since the key is sent as a part of the img file, the GPS would then see
the correct unlock key in both GPS.

After rereading my original post, the first line is confusing the
issue. I don't want to switch the card between GPS units. I want to
know if I can put both City Select and Topo on one card, insert that
card in my GPS and switch between Street level maps and Topo maps.

We both hike and Geocache a lot and it would sure be nice to be able
to use Street Level while driving to the cache site and then be able
to switch to Topo once we are on foot.

Sorry for any confusion

Thanks!

Yes, that is possible, up to the limit of the microSD card and the total of
2025 map segments allowable by the unit firmware. From the map page:
menu/"set up map"/enter/scroll across the top to the icon which is the "i"
inside a circle/menu. This should give you a menu to show/hide the
different map sets.

You can do that exactly as Klatch describes. I have CN, U.S. Topo, and
BlueChart maps on my 76Cx all the time and can shift from one to another.

There is a hierarchy for displaying maps when you have more than one
type of map in the "Show" mode from that menu. If I choose Show All, I
see the City Navigator maps because they are first priority for display.
If I Hide the CN maps, then I see the U.S. Topo maps. If I hide the
CN and U.S. Topo maps, I see the BlueChart maps.

I'm a little confused about this 2025 limit on map segments. On the
2610 in my car I have a 2 GB card and have both City Navigator V8 and
U.S. Topo for the eastern half of the U.S. on the card. When I turn the
GPS on it counts the maps (a "map" is each area as selected in
MapSource) and there is something like 2,700 or 2,800 of them. Is the
"segments" limits you mention a value other than the "maps"?

It is individual map segments assembled from the map products on the PC as
one download to the GPSr.

My next question is how do you load multiple map sets onto the GPS.
I loaded CN, and then loaded Topo and the Topo load over wrote the CN
load...
Thanks

You have to select map segments from all map and send them in one operation.
Select maps form City Select.
Switch map to Topo
Select maps from Topo
Then transfere all.

Every transfer overwrites all maps in the GPS.

Okay, and I see the 76Cx software made the same increase to 2050 in the
change from V2.50 to 2.60. I guess that limit differs from model to
model. My 2610 counts the maps up to 2750 during startup. I checked
the MapSource *.gdb file that was used to build that map and it has
2,748 maps in it so it looks like it is counting them all.

And, depending on the size of your microSD card, this is where you could run
into the 2025 map segment limit. MapSource displays the number of segments
(maps) you have selected and their size in Mb in the lower left hand corner
under the Maps tab.

I have the files selected from CN and TOPO and they are uploading.
Thank You to every one who has helped.

Open MapSource and select the City Navigator maps, then select the Topo
maps from the pull down up on the top left and choose what you want from
those. Both selections will be listed on the maps tab and the number of
maps and size at the bottom is for all selected maps. It will combine
those all into one map file and then upload it.

Sometimes it is a good idea to open two instances of MapSource, make
your selection separately in different windows, save the individual
selections to a *.gdb file in case you want to do it again later, and
then copy one and paste it into the other to combine the selections for
the map upload.

Uploads are very slow by serial port, kind of slow with a USB connected
GPS, and generally fastest if you have the GPS connected (to identify
the unlocked unit) but put the microSD card in a card reader.

Jack, I don't understand your logic here. Are you saying save the Topo
selections in one file and the City Navigator in another? I often save my
map downloads as .gdb files, but not separately. What am I missing or
misunderstanding?

Yes. It seems like if I wanted to modify a uploaded map later by adding
or removing maps from either CN or Topo it was easier (at least to me)
to be able to work on them separately in separate windows, then combine
them again with a copy and paste, and then upload the map again.

So I sometimes would up with a *.gdb file for each MapSource product and
also one for the combined and uploaded map.

Over time, I gotten where I have enough memory cards and large enough
memory cards that I don't do much moving around or changing of maps.
But when I was doing more of it I found having the separate *.gdb for
each mapping product easier.
