Author About to buy 350/360 requesting quick advice

I think, after considering everthing, I'll go with the 350 or 360, depending
on price differental I can find. However, I'm new to this stuff and before
I spend the bucks maybe some of you can advise:

1. Does the "built-in" map provide complete detail for travelling, e.g.
street #'s, directions etc. This may sound like a stupid question but I
bought a marine gps/chartplotter this past year, only to find that the
"basic" built-in map/chart isn't very detailed. One has to buy a
supplemental product costing from $100 and mostly up to really get a decent
marine chart. The store clerks don't make this very apparent when a novice
is buying. Where I live I can't go to a lot of stores and look at these
things. Do all you gurus end up buying supplemental stuff to really have
the info that the average buyer thinks he's getting with the standard
off-the-shelf unit?

2. Either of above units comes with an adpter to run it off your cigarette
lighter. While running, does this charge the battery in the gps unit?
(Sounds stupid but my son had an audio book reader that would only charge
while plugged into AC).

3. Off hand, does anyone know the most recent software/firmware versions
that should come with the brand-new unit? I've searched the net and seen
wild variations in prices and suspect that some of the cheaper ones are left
over with older software versions etc. and if the buyer isn't aware, may not
be getting what he thinks. (It's also surprising how many of the cheaper
ones are refurbished units when you read the finer print).

Many thanks.

1. Go to this web site,
http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/...etroGuideNT.jsp and in the top
right hand corner you will see MetroGuide North America v8. Click on that
and you will see the map that comes with the Nuvi's. There's nothing
supplemental to buy. With an "Off the Shelf" you will get all you need.
Charges, Windshield Mounts, ect. New units at present should have ver. 8
map in it.

2.Yes, they come with a adapter that runs off the cigarette lighter, and
while the unit is turned on it is charging the Nuvi.

3. It depends on how long the unit you purchase has been sitting on the
shelf. It should have ver. 8 map, but the software may have to be updated
to the latest version, which you can get off Garmins web site. There is no
charge for software updates.

Hope this helps to some extent.

I picked up my unit at Costco. While not the cheapest, some online stores
were as much a $20 cheaper, they have a 90 day return policy that makes it
darn attractive.

It is alleged that CGB claimed:

If that's a c3xx series, it comes with the map built-in for the region
it's in. For units sold in the US, that's the US Lower 48, Canada, and
some of the US island possessions. Hawaii is on there, but not very
detailed. I did not check Alaska. Off the shelf and out of the box,
it's ready to go.

Yes and yes.

v8. If bought in North America, it's City Navigator NT v8.

I think it's illegal to sell a refurb unit (of anything) as a new item.

I appreciate the help from you folks. Answers were pretty much what I hoped
for. I'd done a lot of searching for the model and then the best price. I
found a model Nuvi 360 for $409 US with free shipping and no tax from a
reputable internet store and thought that was pretty good so I just wanted
to be sure it wasn't "too good." It's on a FedEx vehicle as we speak.

Again, thanks. I'll be monitoring this newgroup in the future, I'm sure.

You would have to repackage a Garmin refurb to make it look like a new
one.

The legitimate Garmin refurbs are easy to spot. The come in a plain
white box with a black top, are marked Garmin on the top and sides, but
are otherwise unmarked (no images or descriptions). The boxes have a
small label on the front that says "newly overhauled" and that has the
model and serial number on it. The warranty card inside describes the
Newly Overhauled 1-Year Limited Warranty (it is basically the same terms
as you get with a new unit).

And the two refurbs I have seen also included all the accessories,
manuals, and software that came with that model new.

If you buy a refurb and it comes with software (on DVD or preloaded)
that is older than the current version of that software, you can call
Garmin and arrange to receive, for free, an upgrade to the current
version.

I think the Garmin refurbs are a good deal.
