Do I need to format the microSD?

| I just got a new 2GB card for my GPSMAP 60CSx and am not sure how to set
it up, since the manufacturer says the card has to be formatted before
using it. It appears that this question has been asked before on the
newsgroup, but the posts are no longer on the server. The manual for
the GPSMAP 60CSx doesn't mention whether or not new cards have to be
formatted before downloading maps. You'd think this would be something
they'd cover in the manual.
Anyway, do I need to format it and if so what format do I use? Or will
Mapsource simply format the card the first time it's used?

| As Emily used to say: "Never mind." I checked and the Crucial microSD
card I got was formatted for FAT16. I reformatted for FAT32 because it
provides a bit more efficient usage of the space, and I gather that the
GPSMAP 60Cx can read FAT32. I don't imagine it can read NTFS though.

It won't read NTFS.
Many memory cards come formatted FAT (also called FAT16) and some of the
newer ones come FAT32. If you ever have any issues with the card fall
back to FAT and it may solve the problem.
Since you are generally only going to be writing only one large map file
to the card, any improved efficiency on the use of space with FAT32 is
probably a moot point.
You may also be writing *.gpx files to the card if you use the log track
data to card option. Those files are written at the rate of one file
per day and they generally pretty small, less than one MB, and much less
in most cases.
