Author What site has detailed info of Garmin models

It's not Garmin else I shouldn't have been confused for years <bg>, I =
did
find one site but it only had very older models

This is what I want to see Side-by-Side comparision

1. A comparision of different models in same family

2. Internal or External memory

3. Max amount of internal memory

4. If we can upgrade or load additional map to the internal memory

5. NT or regular map format

6. And the one keeps bugging me that do we just throw away the pre-loaded
GPS when the map is getting too old, or if there is any way to upgrade to
newer or better map? I have an older model using internal memory, and I =
can
erase the map to replace with other, but what about the newer model's????

And some like that. Cuz the more I read the more confuse I become. =
Like
early this morning I checked with eBay and saw several StreetPilot 2720 =
for
around $280-300 (it was just few seconds left, so I guess the highest =
could
reach around $350 or so). They all said Pre-Loaded map, and one said it
come with City Navigator v8 on DVD (NT format), and this type of info =
just
confuse the dog out of me.

And few others mention Pre-Loaded and external memory supported (and
playing MP3 displaying JPG etc.), and I did check with Garmin moons ago =
but
just can't be able to find the information I want to know.

Thank you!

That's a very exhaustive list of wants there Joel. I would suggest you get
real comfortable with using Google. You might be surprised what you may find
to build your own data base of information that is specific to your needs in
a gps.
Good Luck!

You can go to this page and check a number of different models and
compare the features:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134

That is a new web page, until just recently you could also include
discontinued models in a comparison and compare the features and
capabilities to the new ones.

But Garmin stupidly left the capability of comparing old ones to new
ones off of their new web page. I suspect they did that because the
newer models are, almost without exception, much less capable at
navigating than the models they replaced. So a lot of people that have,
for example, a StreetPilot 2610, would lose interest in buying a new GPS
if they figured that out. I can't think of any other reason why Garmin
would not want you to be able to compare current models to discontinued
models except that it puts the new models in an unfavorable light.

Anything that Garmin sells with maps preloaded can be upgraded. For
example, if you have one of the models that came with City Navigator
North America NT V8 preloaded, when V9 is released you can pay $75.00 to
buy an upgrade to V9. Garmin sends you an upgrade DVD and you run that
to install the new version to the preloaded unit. You cannot purchase a
retail version of V9 and upgrade a preloaded model, you have to get an
upgrade DVD from Garmin.

The NT (New Technology) format mapping uses an improved compression
algorithm. The maps take up about 50 percent less space in storage in
memory and on memory cards. You can look at the product page for any NT
mapping product and see what models that product is compatible with.
Nearly all the current products can use the NT mapping, if you have an
older GPS you may need to buy the non-NT version.

The 2720 was the last of the StreetPilot 2xxx series models that came
with a DVD that had the same mapping as the mapping that was on the
2720. That allowed you to have the same mapping as was on the 2720
installed on a PC. Then you could use that for planning and for
uploading routes and downloading tracks and data.

Before the preloaded models, most models had a base map with only major
roads on it and you had to upload supplemental maps to get street level
detail. Some models came with the supplemental maps, for other models
it was an optional purchase.

To further the confusion, if you buy one of the newer preloaded models
you can call and ask Garmin and they will send you a DVD with the
preloaded mapping for free.

The majority of the current models are preloaded with detail mapping.
Most of those can use external memory card (SD and microSD for the most
part) to store additional mapping or MP3 files and photos.
