My 82-year old mother just bought a Nextar GPS (probably a Q3) and I'm
wondering if this is a decent unit for her. She'd be using it for short
trips of 50 miles or less and will rely heavily on the voice prompts and
route re-calculation if she misses a turn.

I've played with it a little and it seems a bit rough around the edges
compared to the Nuvi 350 and 680 that I have more experience with. Would
she be better off one of the Garmins? Budget would be around $300.

According to on-line reviews this is not a very good GPS. She probably would be better of with a Garmin.
You can buy a Street Pilot 2610 for very little these days (It will be a used one).

Thanks - she saw the light, returned it and will be borrowing a GPS for the
trip she is going to make. It's only 40 miles, but at 82 years old, even
short trips can be confusing.

40 Miles?.....Be nice to her. Take her and go pick her up. Wouldn't take
that long.

All of the family helps her out whenever necessary and one of us will
probably take her on that trip whenever she decides to go. Her main hobby
now is shopping and the Nextar seemed like too good a deal to her to pass it
up so she probably used the trip as justification. She likes her
independence, but having a GPS in the car with her would almost certainly be
too distracting. If she was bound to get one it seemed like a good idea for
her to get a brand/model that wouldn't frustrate her or take her attention
off the main business at hand.

She's fond of pointing out that my Nuvi picks stupid routes, and I'd have to
agree with her. Tonight the 680 decided that local surface streets were
better than the 2-minute delay on my normal Interstate route. Took me an
extra 30 minutes to get home <g>.
