How to u/l City Nav Eur to Nuvi

| I have an older City navigator Europe from a d/l. If I put this on an SD
card, will it run in my Nuvi 660?
Thanks folks

Is it a gmapsupp.img file? If so try putting that file in a \garmin
folder on the root of the SD card. The nuvi may find it and use it at
startup.
Make sure that there is not already a folder and file with that name
there or you'll overwrite that.
The file may or may not autoroute, it will be interesting to hear if it
worked or not.

| Thanks for the response, Jack.
This is an ".mdf" file that I have. On the 660, the big file in the
"Garmin" folder is an ".img" file.
I'm beginning to think that what I have won't work on my 660 & that it is
intended solely for use on a desktop unit.

That *.img file might be the mapping that was preloaded to the 660.
What is the name and size of it? City Navigator NT North American is
about 970 MB in size I think, CN NT Eur was mentioned as being larger
than that but I don't remember the size.
That *.mdf file might be a file from the Alcohol 120% software that is
used for "backing up" CDs and DVDs:
http://www.alcohol-soft.com/.
If it is a copy of a MapSource CD or DVD, that in itself is not a map
image file. When you have MapSource installed on a PC, you can select
an area to be used for a supplemental detail map and it will be
converted into map image file and uploaded to the GPS receiver as part
of a process. That would be the gmapsupp.img file I mentioned.
Once you have a gmapsupp.img file from MapSource on a Garmin GPS
receiver, it can be copied back to the hard drive and saved there for
later use. There will be some issues with unlocking and the Unit I.D.
of the receiver for locked MapSource products. But gmapsupp.img files
from some unlocked mapping products can be read from any GPS receiver
that will use supplemental detail map files.

You might be right.

Bingo! You da man! I wasn't familiar with that extension, but NOW I am.
I extracted the compressed files into a folder, then ran setup. I now have
a working Mapsource for Europe on my desktop. BTW, I used "Power ISO" for
the extraction.
NOW, I have to wait for my SD card to come in the mail so I can try your
trick.
Will I simply create a new folder under the root such as "L:/Garmin," then
copy all my .img files there?
I'll give it a try ASAP.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you and commend you for giving me
concise, intelligent & straight-forward answers. You're a credit to
newsgroups. It's all too often that responses are given that are insulting
to those posing the questions.

I guess I got lucky. Like they say, even a blind pig occasionally finds
an acorn...

I don't have a nuvi but I think the 660 is one that goes into the Mass
Storage Mode with it is connected to the USB port. With that, the main
memory in the GPS is seen as a removable drive and the SD card in the
GPS is seen as a second drive. They are named something like Garmin and
Garmin SD.
So it you look at the files and folders on the drive named Garmin,
you'll see the main memory.
If there is a \garmin folder there now, and it does not already have a
file in it named gmapsupp.img then that would mean that you do not have
a supplemental map file there now.
If that is the case, I think you could create a map file (start with a
small file, just select a few segments) and send it to the 660 and it
will put it in the \garmin folder as a file named gmapsupp.img.
If you do that, and it works, you should see the map from a Map Setup
menu or something like that and probably be able to turn the map on and
off with a check box.
You may have to turn the preloaded mapping off to see the supplemental
detail map. That is because there is a hierarchy for mapping display
when more than one is turned on and you would have to turn off the maps
that are higher in the hierarchy to see the maps that are lower in the
pecking order.
If all that works, you limitation for supplemental maps will be the
amount of free memory on the 660. When you get your SD card the limit
with be the size of the card.

You're more than welcome, good luck with all that.

| I just couldn't wait.
I used teh SD card form my pocket camera & u/l the map files onto it from
MapSource.
I got a message on my 660 "Cannot unlock maps." I saw something about that
message SOMEWHERE, but can't recall at the moment.
Off to Goggle-land.

| I just read up on this & tried creating a gmapprom.unl file....didn't work.
Looks like I'm out of luck. No big deal... probably won't go to Europe for
a year or two, anyhow.

| Since City Navigator is a locked map, it will not work if you do not have a
25 digit key
that is created using GPS ID(garmin uses serial number) and Map ID (City
Navigator).
Using anyone elses key will not work.
I can help creating key for a small fee.
