| The altimeter page shows total Ascent, can this be saved and accessed at
a later date? If so how please? I find it fascinating information, I
know I can look at the profile of the track from Memory Map, but total
ascent does not seem available there.

| I "second" your question! Indeed, I see no way to save or even stop the
"ascent" or "descent" accumulator at the end of a hike. It seems there is
room for an improvement here. Thanks for raising the question.

What info is in the *.gpx files that can be logged to the microSD card?
I have a 76Cx, it includes the GPS elevation in the data that is in the
*.gpx files. If the CSx models save the barometric altitude also, or
maybe that instead of the GPS elevation, you could see it later by
looking at the *.gpx files from MapSource or any of a number of GPS
utilities.
The *.gpx files are saved if the Log Track To Data Card box is checked
on the Data Card Setup menu. That is accessed from the Track Setup menu
on the Track page.
The track log or *.gpx file feature is not well documented in the user's
manuals unless those are better now than they were a year ago. With
that feature on, every single track point collected will be saved to a
*.gpx file with one file for each day. In the files you'll find track
segments for each on/off or fix lost/fix regained cycle. The data saved
is the location, date/time, and elevation.

Elevation values in the barometric models come from the
barometer so that is what is stored in tracks and waypoints
with one exception. If you mark a waypoint and use the
"average" function, the elevation value is the GPS elevation.

A program can compute the total ascent/descent from the GPX file
that Jack mentions. Otherwise the only way to save the value from
the receiver is with a pencil and paper, etc.
The total ascent/descent can be off from near zero to around
30%. If you're driving the value could be very close. If you
are stationary for much of your trip, a lot of "noise" will be
added to the totals.
The following link has an example:

Thanks Dan.
Well then, there is the answer to the OP's question. If they log the
track to the data card and look at the total ascent in the *.gpx file,
they should be able to see or at least calculate the total ascent.
And they can edit the tracks to see ascents and descents for any portion
of a track. Strong magic! I love the track features on thee 60/76 "x"
series models.
