This was pretty cool. I hadn't heard of GeoCaching before. I found
listings for a couple in my area. On the first one I failed to find it, in
part because it either wasn't there or was hidden too well for me, but
mostly because of the numerous bees in the area scarred me away quickly.
The coordinates were on a very steep side of a hill completely overgrown
with brush and trees. I fell badly once and sent the bees buzzing. I
almost sent the gps flying when I fell.

But I tried another cache today and found it. My first! It's a pretty
interesting hobby.

My 650 was spot on. At maximum 2D magnification the uncertainty circle was
about size of the tree the cache was hidden under. The location fix my 650
gave me couldn't have been more accurate. The accuracy was within a couple
of feet, maximum.

Yes, it is a fun sport. There is an entire group on the USENET dedicated to
it: alt.rec.geocaching

Drat. My ISP newserver doesn't have that group. :-(

I'm a long time geocacher. Just a caveat for a newcomer to the
sport, the coordinates of the cache are only partially reliant on
your gps accuracy. The other half of the equation is the accuracy and
skill level of the cache owner. I've found caches that are as far as
50 feet off because either the cache owner was not particularly
careful about getting an exact fix or perhaps because the GPSr of the
cache owner was not properly locked into a strong signal or was sent
to a differant datum set.

It's a fun hobby. I'm at about 250 finds in 3 or 4 years. Happy
hunting..

I have no idea what went wrong on my first attempt. Only that the fix was
on a completely overgrown steep and dangerous hillside, one that was near
impossible to safely search without getting stung, spiked, or scraped. I
think it would have been easier to search in the winter months when the
branches are bare and the bees are in hibernation.

The second outting was much more enjoyable. And very popular given the
number of log messages. I may try another one soon.
