Author Nuvi Maps Question

When one buys a Nuvi, I see it is preloaded with a map. Is this just
a base map and to get real street level details one needs to buy
additional maps to install on an SD card in the unit?

(ie similar to the 2610)

No, it's like the 2620 -- full map included [but on flash, not a hard
drive like the 2620]. But DO be aware that some units are shipping with
'2008' maps while others are shipping with the previous version -- and
unlike when I bought my 2610, tough luck if you wind up with an older
version. If you do get the older one, get ready to shell out another $75
to upgrade to what the guy down the street got for the same price you
paid...

I only have my Nuvi 680 for few days and will be lot to learn (as well as
many mistakes to correct), but base on a very limited experience with my new
Nuvi 680, this is what I know.

- BASE MAP is permanent map on ROM (Read Only Memory) which can't be deleted
and it comes with ALL models

- Pre-Loaded Map is the Street Level map loaded to internal memory which I
believe it can be deleted (pretty dangerous and I read it may cost around
$230-250 for Garmin to fix the damage .. but I can't confirm on this).

- My Nuvi 680 comes with Pre-Loaded City Navigator 2008 NT which I read it's
a newer version than CN v8 (or 2008 is v9)

- I have ordered the 8GB SDHC which will be arrived 2morrow to find out
more, but I read that Nuvi with external memory can use different map on the
external memory.

I believe StreetPilot 2610 doesn't have pre-loaded map, or the only
street-level map is on the CF memory card, the internal map is the BASE MAP.
Also, besides few newer features like POI, pronoucing street-name, MP3
player, FM or MSN Direct Traffic Control, and the slimmer size etc.. you may
not gain much from the Nuvi. Or each has some strong and weak point.

Sorry, but this is not clear to me.

On the 2610, there is a permanent base map with limited detail. One
purchases "City Navigator North America" (currently V8) and using
Mapsource, downloads the more detailed maps to a CF card (2GB for the
whole USA). Also, waypoints and routes get downloaded to CF).

I would hope to be able to buy a Nuvi and be able to download all my
waypoints now on Mapsource with CN V8 (have about 100) to the Nuvi.

The follow up post from Joel is a bit unclear regarding adding
detailed street level maps as they become available from Garmin.

So let me summarize my questions:

1) Does the Nuvi come with the street level detailed maps (City Nav
8)?
2) Can I download all my current waypoints on from my 2610 from
Mapsource with City Nav 8?
3) Can I upgrade to new City Nav versions on the Nuvi and Mapsource
later?

Thanks,
B

Because StreetPilot 2610 and Nuvi don't work the same (other StreetPilot
2xxx with pre-loaded map work similar to Nuvi).

- StreetPilot 2610 doesn't have Pre-Loaded street-level-map (street level
map installed on *internet* memory), but it use the map on external =
memory
(CF memory).

- All Garmin GPSes have Base Map in ROM (Read Only Memory) that can't be
deleted

- Nuvi 3xx (not all Nuvi 3xx) and 6xx have Street_Level_Map pre-loaded in
RAM (can be deleted), and they also accept external memory SD and SDHC =
(SDHC
is a newer SD memory card) there you can install

- newer street_level_maps (more than one if you wish)

- MP3, graphic, POIs, and any junk you want

YES, the Nuvi comes with City Navigator (mine comes with City Navigator
2008 or v9). Or *all* Garmin GPSes come with Street_Level_Map but some =
as
pre-loaded some come with CD/DVD that you install yourself (either to
internal or external memory depending on the model's)

YES, anything you can READ using Mapsource you can transfer to GPS unit. =
And
I read and was told (by Garmin tech) that Waypoints is probably the only
thing you can transfer to Nuvi 680 (and other Nuvi to I guess)

Or Nuvi doesn't have some other feature's StreetPilot has.

YES, that's what the external memory is for. I believe that you may be =
able
to upgrade to the internal, but may not be a good idea.

Sorry, but I thought the answer was clear in so far as the questions
asked. Now you have asked more, and the answers to these questions are:

1: yes -- although the newer ones come with 2008 [and there is apparently
little way of knowing for sure which version is in the box you are
buying].
2: yes -- although all you will get on the nuvi is the name and location
of your waypoint [a 'favorite' in nuvi] -- not any 'comments' you may
have added in mapsource. Nor will you be able to add a phone number in
mapsource and have that number used to dial your cell phone by a
bluetooth capable nuvi.
3: maybe -- although as far as I'm concerned, mapsource and nuvi don't
even play well together today, and I see no indication that will improve
in the future. However, I'm fairly sure you will at least be able to
independently update the maps in either the nuvi or mapsource [although
at possibly 2x the price if you want both updated] -- the current update
price being $75 for the US maps.

I didn't think much to Mapsource's functionality in this area - so I wrote
my own POI creation software....

This makes it easy to add dialable 'phone numbers, and all the rest of the
data the unit is able to access. (JPEG/MP3 and copious comments). A key part
of the process is compiling the resulting .gpx files using POI Loader',
rather than transferring them as Favourites.

Oh. that is rough. Here in Oz if you buy the unit after the new map version
is released, your maps are updated to the new version at no charge. Are you
sure that it is not the same in the US?

Yep

Are you sure about this - a few months ago some of the units did not come with maps
- have a look at some of those that take blue chart maps as these seem to sold
without any maps

Not sure why you say this, and with my Nuvi there was not a choice - the new map
overwrote the old

They do not charge you twice - the one CD updates both the Nuvi and
Mapsource

Thanks. With 2008 coming out, I was wondering about that.

I saw it -- but you charge for it [as you should] -- but I already
dropped quite a bit on previous Garmins, Mapsource updates over the years
and this latest nuvi. I expected more from what I already paid for...

New garmin policy -- at least here in the US. See quite a few other

Given the reversal on 2 unlock codes, and no free updates if you buy
hardware with an outdated map, while what you say was true in the past,
given the fact that nuvi's don't even come with mapsource, it's not at all
clear to me that the above will continue to be true come next update.

quietguy

I should think there will be a big uproar from dealers about that policy - no
dealers likes to see his stock devalued due to out of date maps, and honest
dealers will of course advise their customers that they are buying old stock
etc
