City Navagator for PC

| This is just to comfirm what someone told me a month ago. If you buy a
Garmin gps that comes preloaded with City Navagator, it does not come with
the pc software in the box, but you can order it from support for a nominal
$15 charge. I just got mine and it installed and is working nicely. The
maps on my pc now match my gps.
Note that you will need the 25 character unlock code that came on a yellow
sheet of paper with your gps.

I got the DVD for free. Just call tech support and ask for it.

According to the support guy I emailed with, the usual charge is $15 though
he said he'd wave it in my case. Apparently your case too.

My Nuvi 680 doesn't come with the 25-character code. I did try to find =
it
as I have 3 Garmin GPSes before this Nuvi 680, but can't find it.=20
Argggg.. I found it! the yellow sheet of paper stuck on the size of the
box

Garmin ships it over-nite and it would be cheaper if they just include =
the
DVD with the GPS. It may costs them few cents to make a copy of the DVD,
but it's fair to customers who paid for it.

So the tech support guy is waving $15?
I bet he looks silly sitting there with a $10 bill and a $5 bill in his
hand, talking to you on the phone, waving the money.

The bigger question, are they shipping a 2008 dvd on request yet? For
the many who are getting 2008 on their new nuvi's, it would kind of make
sense that what is on the pc matches what is in the gps. Not to mention
the question of the unlock codes and which version they function with
[though I do remember sometime back someone saying they were backward
compatible -- or is that a dream I had?]

I agree. It would cost them virtually nothing to include it.
However, given that they've allowed Mapsource to fall behind (no addresses
or phone numbers for waypoints), and the lack of a DVD in the box, I wonder
if it's part of a master plan to eventually discontinue their PC software.
The PCs used to be critical, but no more.

Don't know. They sent me v8 which matches my gps. Hopefully 2008 updates
will be available soon.
As I understand it, the unlock code is tied to your gps, not the software,
but is also used to unlock the pc software. If true, 2008 would take the
same unlock code as v8 did.

unlock codes are never 'forward compatible' -- otherwise, you would never
have to pay for an update.

I always write down all numbers on the CD, and because the color of CN =
v8=20
is dark blue and I don't have silver marker, so I wrote all 3 numbers of =
the
boxes.

With the *old* policy Garmin allowed customers to use the same unclocked
code on 2 GPS devices not only have 2 different 25-character #'s they can=
be
2 completely different design (model's).

I just called yesteday for the NA and European DVDs for my newly
bought Nuvi 370 - no questions (or fees) asked - will be shipped ASAP
and I should get it by Wed.

I am glad they do because it's the right thing for Garmin to include =
what
customers paid for. It's fair for them to include the DVD map in the =
first
place.
