I just downloaded an update for my 650 and they definitely changed the way
the touch screen works, hopefully for the better. I used to be able to
touch jwith something pointed, say with a fingernail tip, or a stylus. No
more. Now it takes a much wider depression, the whole finger tip. A stylus
doesn't work at all anymore.

This makes it tougher to easily select items on the 2D map. I'd gotten used
to using a fingernail tip for precise pointing.

One of my biggest complaints was all the false hits. Misreading my finger
position and pressing buttons I didn't press, sometime on the other side of
the screen. Often the correct button would highlight, but do nothing.

I'm not sure I like this change but I'll have to use it for a while and see
if I can get used to it.

Bruce.

Does that have a touch screen calibration menu? If so, try
recalibrating it with the stylus. Once when my 2610 was acting like it
was not working quite right I recalibrated it and it came back to normal.

The update intentionally reduces the sensitivity of the nuvi screen.
There is a long thread on gpspassions about it. Several users are
backing off to the previous firmware. The update was to fix a problem
where quick taps were giving false selections [buttons picked at places
farr from where the screen was tapped], but it appears to have gone too
far. It is unrelated to calibration.

[other users have reported this firmware update as also reduced the max
volume.]

That is my experience too. The difference is very large. I agree with the
goal of reducing false taps but I do think they've gone too far with this
chance. They need to find happy medium. Compared to what it was, you
practically have to mash it now to get a reaction.

That would be very bad. Max volume was barely acceptable for a noisy car
before.

Ah, thanks for the details.

Have you tried recalibrating the screen since
updating the firmware?

See other posts. It has nothing to do with the calibration. They
intentionally changed the sensitivity to reduce the false hits. See this
NG as well as a long thread on gpspassions regarding the 2.80 firmware
and why people are reverting to 2.70:

http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/...?TOPIC_ID=89617

[The funny part is that about three weeks ago, I traded emails with a
Garmin droid who said that the false hit problem on my 350 was clearly a
hardware problem that could never be fixed by a future firmware upgrade,
and I should, as soon as possible, exchange the unit with the original
seller -- which I did -- and then sent the second one back as well, since
it had exactly the same false hit problem. Two weeks later, 2.80 came
out and the false hits are replaced with very deliberate fat finger
presses. Recent interactions sure don't seem like the Garmin I used to
know and respect...]

Thanks for the info .. and sorry for the late
reply. I thought that might be the answer because
recalib did help with my touch screen unit (a
different model)

No. I originally recalibrated it using a stylus. You can't get more
precise than that. But if the touchscreen will no longer accept a single
point, precision recalibration may no longer be possible. So I've been
afraid of doing the recalibration and screwing it up with my fat finger.
