Garmin GPS18USB
Windows 2000
City Select North America 6.01
nroute 2.0

I run nroute and the maps show full detail.
Plug in gps18. As soon as the satellites are acquired,
the map detail disappears and the icon in the lower right
says "map detail locked".
If I go to the unlock tool, it tells me that the maps
are unlocked and don't expire. If I save the unlock codes
to a file, delete the lock codes, restore the codes from the
file, the map detail comes back to full street level.
The system works until next time I restart the program...
although I've not torture tested it much.

I went round and round with Garmin support. Reinstalled the
software/drivers until I was blue in the face. Went thru the
whole registry edit to delete old versions. No help.

If I upgrade to nroute 2.76, the symptom is the same, but
saving/restoring the lock codes does not fix it. Sounds like
copy protection gone WAY wrong...

Google hints that the maps might be locked to the serial number of the
receiver. I bought this from a place that had multiple units. No way
to tell if the sw and hw got mixed up.
When I asked Garmin about that, the previously responsive online support
VANISHED.

FWIW, I did upgrade the GPS18 firmware to 3.0 so it would work with
spanner on another machine. Works fine with S&Trips, but I'd like
to have the Garmin voice prompts.
Don't know if that's relevant.

Is there a way I can fix this so the Garmin maps work? As-is, it's
a magnetic doorstop...and one less future Garmin customer.

Just a wild guess, but are you using a user or admin account ?

The maps are unlocked to the internal unit ID of the GPS (which is also
linked to the external serial number). If your maps are not unlocked to your
specific GPS 18 then they will re-lock whenever you connect the your GPS 18
to the PC. Only a connection to the correct GPS 18 will keep the maps
unlocked.

Did you unlock it yourself or did the dealer do it. Either way you should
have a coupon code and the details to the myGarmin account that holds the
unlock details. If you log into that you can check the serial number or unit
ID of the GPS 18 used to unlock it and compare it to yours. If you unlocked
it yourself and made an obvious typo in the GPS18 serial number then Garmin
will fix it for you. If the dealer unlocked it and gave you the wrong unlock
code or GPS 18 then your beef is with the dealer. As long as the deal was
legitimate, either the dealer or Garmin should be able to come up with a
solution.

Bought it used, map cd has the bazillion digit unlock code.

Been using the same paper map for 30 years. Transferred it from
car to car to car to car...
Haven't checked lately. Maybe you can't buy paper maps any more.
Probably gone out of business because they couldn't charge me to move
my map. Insert video of Mr. Phelps getting his assignment...

Looks like I'm a FORMER Garmin Customer.
Thanks
