It is discouraging that Garmin while applauded for constantly coming out
with new and improved units, that they completely abandon support to
existing units.

This should signal hesitancy for people to purchase new units because it
eventualy will become tossed and abandoned.

I made a significant investment around 2001 with the StreetPilot III color
($999). I have tried to find out how to update the unit's built in map to no
avail. The basic eprom map is grossly outdated. Some state highways have
changed the layout of ramps and exits (for example, the unit will say "bear
left" while the actual highway split needed was a "bear right").

The SP-III came with only rudimentary built in
maps (the "base map") .. and City Navigator 4
(circa 2001-2002) or so which you loaded into
Garmin-proprietary memory cards. Also came with a
usb map loader to load the cards (max size of 256 MB).

My SP-III is now running with City Navigator NA
version 8 .. and if you wanted to spend some $$$,
yours could be too. My son is now using it and
quite happy. He could even go with CN NA 2008 if
he wanted.

I replaced the SP-III with an SP-2720 (CN NA NT 8)
maps pre-loaded, and will soon upgrade it to the
new 2008 version. Big downside of the SP-III is
that it maxes out at 256 MB memory which limits
the amount of area it will hold.

A bit better than my old eMap. The old map software (MetroGuide?) allowed a
much finer selection of maps to be loaded. I was able to load just the maps
I needed for a trip from Chicago to Atlanta and it all just fit in my 64MB
card.

Now that I've loaded CN NA NT 8 for my Nuvi 650, it only allows the
selection of whole states. I just checked and the same trip would now take
139MB and the biggest card I can order is 128MB.

Oh well. It was past time to retire the eMap anyway.

Bruce.

Did so long ago (though I still have it). My
walkaround unit is the 60Cx.

The base map of all old/new units are pretty much useless, you will need
newer street-level-map and you can upgrade to current street-level-map =
for
$75

The only problem that StreetPilot III only accept datacard up to 256MB =
max
(the largest datacard is 512MB but not compatible with SP III).

Maybe I am missing a point here..
I have CN 8.. yup, paid the $75. But that's just for the downloadable
maps I put on the card. I am talking about the base map if I venture
out tio an area with no doanloadbale maps.
My connector to the SP-III is a serial connection. The only USB is
to the datacard programmer. Are you saying somehow you were
able to replace the basic map?

No .. you just upload a new set into the card.
No Garmin has replaceable basemaps.

I upgraded my SPIII this week with a reconditioned SP2610 for less
than they wanted for a 512MB datacard!

You can buy these for about $250 now and they are an awsome upgrade to
the SPIII. Many more features, much better routing, and the new 2008
maps.

StreetPilot was the one I aimed for years, but because of the dash =
problem
of my new van (and all cars too) so I went for the Nuvi 680. And I have
read so many reviews and some reports from StreetPilot owners saying Nuvi
6xx has larger screen size than StreetPilot when they have pretty much =
exact
same size.

StreetPilot may has around 1/16" taller, when Nuvi 680 has about 1/16"
wider.
