I have a question where I'm confused in reading the Joe Mehaffey GPS
PRoduct Review at http://gpsinformation.info/nuvi/nuvireview.html

Joe says "NuVi [has] the capability of being run from external
12volt power ... OR by a USB connection to a laptop or
other computer's USB connector (Computer must be ON to
power or charge the NuVi)."

Two things very much confuse me about Joe's statements above.

1) Is Joe saying that the nuvi can either charge or run with USB?
2) How can the nuvi both charge and run with 12 volts if USB is 5 volts?

2 connectors, one to be run by 12V car system, the other one 5V USB.
Both most likely have a converter behind to produce the internal
voltage out of the supply.

Or, it comes with a lighter plug that outputs 5v...

The lighter plug adapter for the Nuvi 660 supplies 12 V at the unit, not
5V. So says the multimeter.

It may be because your multimeter presents a very high impedance which
results in essentially no current flow through the regulator circuit.
Try taking a reading with a 1K ohm resistor across the 12 volt output. or
while it is plugged into the Nuvi.

It would be a very bad regulator to behave like that.

But make sure that resistor is at least 0,25W and be prepared that it
gets hot quickly.
