Who can tell me of it pays to order the Zumo 450 in the U.S. and then
updating it to the European version. Do I have to buy the legal software?

Reading over the specs here:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=8582

that would have a North American base map, it cannot be set for
international time zones, the MSN Direct and FM TFC functions are for
the U.S. market, I think it will "Americanize" the pronunciations of
street names on any optional mapping for Europe, and the XM Weather and
NavTraffic are for the U.S. market.

Garmin wants Europeans to buy their products from their European
distributors and has gone to some trouble to not make the North American
models internationally useful. But I don't think they explained all the
details to us. Maybe you can figure that out if you read the specs and
the online manual, you may find some other issues that make it less than
desirable for full time European use.
