Given the improved sensitivity/performance of the new chips is an
external antenna (like the Gilson) of any real benefit?

I use an external just to keep the unit off the windshield

I have one antenna semi-permanently in my car. This does increase
sensitivity (and convenience), but I'm not sure that it has ever
helped obtain signals that wouldn't have otherwise been seen by my
76CSx alone.

I use another external antenna while hiking (velcro'd to my hat). No
doubt that I'd lose signal many times without it (GPS in my pocket) -
I've confirmed that. Receiving sat signals on the top of my head
solves the problem of my body blocking half of them. In dense forests,
even the sensitive built-in antenna has a difficult time; in steep
canyons I've lost satellite reception even with the external antenna.
