Can someone point to or explain the old and new ulock code policies again?

I had an old Legend, upgraded to a Vista C and now contemplate going to
a Vista/Legend HCx.

For my existing maps, do I need to unlock these again when using with my
new HCx? Will I get that code with the new Unit or will I have to
get it from Garmin, and will it be free or do I have to pay for it?

If I buy a new mapping product, can i use it on my two (Vista C and HCx)
units?
