Author Garmin eases my Topo 2008 upgrade pain

In an earlier post, I complained about having to pay full price to
upgrade from Topo to Topo 2008.

Garmin sent me this today:

"My name is Steven and I am happy to help you with this. You can find
a
$30 rebate for the new 2008 version here:
http://www8.garmin.com/whatsNew/cur...topo_rebate.pdf

Also, Amazon has the software for $78.87
here:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/re...0RAASFK/sr=8-1/
qid=1185
588448/ref=dp_rebates_1/104-9694182-4853533?
ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=el
ectronics&qid=1185588448&sr=8-1

This brings the grand total to $48.87

Unfortunately I can't upgrade you free of charge. However, to
reimburse
you for the inconvenience I am willing to order a carrying case for
your
60CSx free of charge."

I will be upgrading. Topo 2008 looks a lot better, has updated roads,
and has corrected some features, at least in the East Tennessee areas
I checked out with the online viewer.

Thanks for the very helpful post! As a naive user, I have a somewhat
different perspective. I have spent some time comparing the old USA TOPO to
the TOPO 2008 maps for my area in Pennsylvania on the Garmin website and I
was rather dissapointed. The new maps appear to be much more highly
"vectorized" i.e., they do an inferior job of approximating the curves and
angles in roads and trails that I am familar with. I would be delighted to
use the new digital altitude data provided with the new maps, but, for my
area, the maps themselves appear to be inferior. Indeed, some trails and old
roads that I am familar with and currently use, seem to have been eliminated
and I do not see new roads and trails which I know to exist. Again, I do not
claim to be a knowledgable user here--this is just a personal perspective.

Well, it's still 100,000:1. Make sure you click the "More Detail"
button on the online MapSource Viewer app. As far as I can tell, in my
area the roads in Topo 2008 have been updated to at least the level of
City Navigator V8. Detail in my favorite mountain bike parks (Haw
Ridge N36 00.131 W84 10.112 and Norris N36 13.159 W84 04.266) is
greatly improved over US Topo, with at least twice as many topo lines
shown. As far as trails go, none of the software I own shows off-road
trails very well, including US Topo 24K Nat Parks East or National
Geographic Topo! at 24000:1, even in major parks like the Smoky Mtns.
I guess it's up to us to hike or mtn bike the trails and save the GPS
tracks ourselves ;8-) If you have National Geographic Topo!, they have
a website to trade tracks with other users.

Just a comment about the $30 rebate...It's only good for PREVIOUS
owners of Topo who are UPGRADING. Read the REBATE details.

And save the package - I tossed it and discovered that you must submit the
barcode.
