eTrex legend Cx newbie question

| Folks:
Just got an eTrex Legend Cx for my birthday. There are two things I
can't figure out how to do. Advice would be much appreciated.
1. When I use Setup to turn the backlight up, it works fine. But when
I power it off and back on the backlight resets to zero.
2. How do I look at a map for an area I'm not in at the moment? For
example, I'm in Seattle but I have the City Navigator Europe sd card
in the GPS. How do I look at hotels in Scotland?
Thanks.

Don't know about that. Likely a "feature" to save
power.

Zoom way out. Then use the stick to pan the
pointer to Scotland and zoom back in to see the
details.

Thank you Phil. That'll get me started.

| 1) Mine too
do this: After power on, press power button again to change the
backlight between 0, preset and 100%
I do this every time I startup, to get some backlight
I have no problem in using this same button 3 times (long press + short+
short)

Thanks. Seems like "odd" design if settings don't stay changed, but
your suggestion is a nice workaround.

Take a look at the various "Find" functions in the manual.
You can find cities, addresses and "points of interest", relative to
either your current actual location, or relative to some other point.
Entering text on the receiver itself can be a real pain, so it's
probably easier to browse the maps using MapSource on your PC.
But I wonder, if you have the NT version on a memory card, do you
also get a DVD with maps you can use on your PC? I'd hope so, because
the receiver is a lot less useful without it.

Having read the manual, I can't figure out how to get the Find
function to go anywhere other than nearby or a point on the map that I
scroll to. [Scrolling from Seattle to Scotland is a bit painful.]
The NT version of the memory card does not come with a DVD.

no this is not odd design. Your setting is saved, but it applies only if you
switch the backlight on by a short power key press. Then the backlight comes
with your selected level.
Permanent backlight would stress the batteries too much. With external power
connected, backlight is permanently on. This is exactly what the user needs
(at least me).

There's a separate setting for backlight timeout, so the backlight
would only stay on for 15 seconds or so.
