| I just got back from a 9-day trip around the Nova Scotia area. I found that
MOST of the places that I stayed and ate at weren't on the POI list, and
these were the best places we could find. I guess that the POI file needs
to be about double the size it is now.
The routing and road maps were great, if allowance is made for new
constuction changes.
I guess that as the technology matures, having all the places(POI's) in the
database may become the deciding factor when comparing GPS brands.
I understand that the mapping company has over a hundred people driving
around fixing the map. They probably could have 1500 and still not find all
the POI's and road changes. Having an easy way for users to submit updates
helps, but it doesn't seem fair for us to update their maps while they are
charging us for an update. I wish they would give credit for submitting
updates so that the annual updates wouldn't be so expensive.
Is there a GPS company that gives free updates?
PS: whoever said that the Nuvi stops inroute arguments about which way is
the best way to go hasn't traveled with someone who is good with regular
maps. My next trip may require a tether on the unit to keep it in the car.
My wife stopped counting u-turns at about the 20th one.

| Report the errors and findings to Navteq on their site. I've done it and
they added or moved things by the next revision. If no one tells them, it
may stay that way for years until their cartographer works on that area.
Bad thing is restaurants. They come and go and change names so fast it must
give them fits. Gas stations around here change from brand to brand for
some reason.
Personally, I'd hate to work in that area. It has to be a nightmare as it
will always be a "complaint department" job.

Garmin does within so many days of purchase if a new version comes out.

I've found that my Nuvi, as well as Mapquest, Yahoo Maps, give directions
that will get you where you want to go, but they often lack common sense
that cannot be built into a computer. What is deemed by computer to be best
certainly is not always best. Sometimes you can tell that by looking at a
map, other times you have to know the route and why it should be avoided.
Handy gadget, but not a substitute for a basic knowledge of where you want
to go and why a particular route should be chosen. Where I find it useful
is the last mile of a trip, going into some housing development or
industrial park with lots of turns and cul de sacs. I can drive cross
country with no maps, just following roads signs and having a general
knowledge that Utah is west of the Mississippi River. Or that Florence is
south of Milan and Rosano is southwest of Florence. I've given people
directions to my house and I've seen them go 275 miles OK, then make a wrong
turn 50 feet from my house. .
