Author GPSMAP 60CSx calculates different route than the MapSource software

Hi NG,

when I create a route in MapSource (City Navigator Europe v9) and
upload it to my Garmin device, in my understanding the following
happens: The route created in MapSource consists of several waypoints,
the software only calculates the route from one waypoint to the next
one. When I upload the route, actually only the waypoints are
transferred. To navigate the route the device calculates the route
from one waypoint to the next one again. Is this right? Then I would
assume that the GPS device uses the same logic as the MapSource
software and therefore the resulting route is the same. But it just
happened several times that my Garmin device tried to lead me a total
different route, containing totally useless and mindless u-turns etc.
No idea why. Any idea why?

Have you set up both MS and 60CSx for
the same mode of transport(e.g. delivery vehicle, pedestrian etc)
*and*
the same type of route(e.g. avoid motorways and perhaps avoid U-turns,
etc)?

Excuse my ignorance but, what is a motorway?

Assumption: motorway = highway

On a similar line Mapsource creates a different route than my 60CSX, in
fact the 60CSX insists on using a road that is really snarled with road
works now and for the next 6 months. How can I get an identical route
from Mapsource into the 60CSX? Motorways in UK ire similar to U-Bahns in
Germany and Freeways in USA.

That is generally right. There are like two ways to create a route. If
you used the Waypoint Tool and clicked on each location to place the
waypoints, and then built the route by clicking on each waypoint in the
desired sequence, what you say would be right.

The second way to built a route is to use the Route Tool and click on
the locations you want to pass through. Those location will then be
called via points if you look at the route properties. Via points are
of various types depending on what you clicked on and their properties
(names, locations, etc.) cannot be edited.

Also, when routes are uploaded, waypoints will be seen in the waypoints
list on the GPS but the via points will not be listed with the
waypoints. The points in the route, either waypoints or via points,
will be seen listed if you look at the route from the Route page.

Might be a faulty assumption. I don't think anyone is sure as to
exactly how the logic in MapSource or the GPS receivers works or compares.

I think if you have the same map data on both the GPS and under
MapSource, routes might wind up being exactly the same when activated on
the GPS. But some of the settings on the GPS (snap to road, follow
road, off road, quickest, shortest, vehicle type, etc.,) could be
different than you Preferences settings in MapSource and that would
account for things not going the same way in both places.

Are you using the same mapping (City Navigator V8, U.S. Topo, etc.,) in
both places? If not, that would be the first issue. Are you using base
map or supplemental maps? Tell us more about the version of MapSource
and the mapping software you're using and maybe we can help narrow it down.

A European term for what would be called an Interstate highway here in
the U.S.

No - they're underground railways. You're probably thinking of
"Autobahn".

Yes.

Sigh, I know, I know there are problems with growing old, though it is
better than the alternative!

I only use a GPS-V, so the following comment may not apply to a newer
autorouter like a 60Csx, but do you have "recalculate route" turned on in
the 60Csx settings? On my -V you can tell it not to recalculate your route
if you detour or otherwise depart from the preplanned route you downloaded.
I turn this off because often if I take a highway exit for a roadside
restroom reststop, the GPS thinks I'm "detouring" and wants to recalculate.

Anyway, check if there's some sort of setting you can turn off that involves
whether the 60Csx recalculates routing when you divert from the original
route. (And I'm interested because I've been following 60Csx threads on this
NG as I'm considering getting one to replace/supplement my -V. From what
I've been reading it seems as if the 60Csx is the best "match" for what
my -V does, but with the new SIRF chipset and plenty o' memory).

That is what I do.

In both places I am using City Navigator Europe v9.

The MapSource version is the most recent version 6.12.4.0.

The route-planner in the 60CSx ist principally the same as in Mapsource.
In Mapsource there are some additional parameters configurable
compared to the 60CSx. Just try with Mapsource to plan the same route
but with different speed-settings for different road types an you will
see that small variations to speed settings will result in major route
changings. The same is for the slider for preferred road-speed-type.
Both are not available in the 60CSx. The you have the parameter of "best
route" oder "fastest calculation" etc. instead that is not available in
Mapsource.
