putting eTrex Legend Cx into NMEA mode

| I can't figure out how to put my eTrex Legend Cx into NMEA mode. With
gpsd the device is correctly identified using Garmin USB Binary, so I
don't have a more fundamental connection problem.
On the Interface Setup page, the box labeled USB Garmin Data Format
shows only "Connected" or "Not Connected" as appropriate. This doesn't
appear to be the place to choose output format.
The USB Mass Storage button is selected (yellow) and the device beeps
when I try to move away from it with the joystick. Pressing is the
only option available, but that puts the device into USB Mass Storage
mode.
Is it possible to put the device into NMEA mode using the user
interface, or is it necessary to send an appropriate command using
software?
I'm using FW 2.70 but see from a recent post that 2.80 is available.
The Fine Manual doesn't offer any clues about changing output modes,
and NMEA is not even mentioned.

| I don't think any of the eTrex units that have USB can do anything but
the Garmin protocol. The origianl eTrex's had a serial port (but not
USB) and did have the NEMA option. The newer ones with USB only
support the proprietary Garmin protocol. You can get documentation on
this at:

You seem to be right - it seems the "x" models don't support NMEA like
their simpler eTrex cousins do.
Thanks,

My 76Cx has choices of GARMIN, NMEA In/NMEA Out, TEXT OUT, and NONE for
Serial Data Formats. That is on the Interface Setup menu.
