Using City Select with 2 GPS units
|
|

| I currently own a GPS-V and will be buying a 60Cx shortly. I already own
City Select North America 7 and use it with the GPS-V. (I originally got
City Select 4.01 with the -V and have upgraded to v5, then v7 in the last
few years).
My question is can I use the City Select v7 with my new 60Cx, or is it
"tied" to only the GPS-V? I'd think that I bought the rights to use the
software with any Garmin unit I hook up to my PC, but maybe not...

| I can't answer your question directly but will share my experience. I
installed CN6 on my computer for use with my Garmin V. My son-in-law bought
a BMW motorcycle that had a Garmin installed. His came with CS6. His
laptop is an Apple so he installed his CS6 on my Dell (same that has CN6).
I subsequently upgraded to CN8. I can download maps from either set to my
V. Mapsource doesn't seem to care as long as it's a gps it recognizes.

| OK, thanks. That's good info, but it's basically saying 2 sets of software
can feed one piece of hardware. I'm looking for the opposite. Can one
version of City Select feed two separate pieces of Garmin hardware? (Thanks
TL for the info!)

If you log in to your account at Garmin, you should be able to see a
list of products, and if you have any free unlocks available.
I have CS:EU v6 and got a free upgrade to CS:EU v7 - both came with
unlocks for two devices (one tied to the GPS18 it originally came
with) but I believe the latest Garmin maps are only coming with a
single unlock.
Next time I buy a GPS, it will NOT be from Garmin.

| Actually, that's what I have. When my son in law hooks up his Garmin, he
can go to/from his gps from either CN or CS. I do the same to/from my V.
What's ironic is that I'm contemplating the same thing you are. My V is
getting long in the tooth and the 60Csx looks like just what I'm looking
for. Even though I have a good feeling about the software, I also have my
doubts. I guess I could call Garmin.

| I have gone to the Garmin site to the unlock section (never have used the
online unlock before) and there's a selection that says "unlock additional
hardware for use with your Garmin software" or something along those lines.
Didn't click it as I don't want to start a process I can't finish yet. My
60Cx should be arriving by the weekend, so I'll register it online then try
that "unlock additional hardware..." option since I'll have serial numbers
and etc for the 60Cx then and see what happens.

| OK, got my new 60Cx last night. Did an online registration with Garmin, then
the online unlock wizard to get the second unlock code. Indeed my City
Select 7 did accept a second unlock code, and connects to the 60Cx just
fine. So looks like CS7 will indeed work with 2 pieces of hardware.
