| Hi,
Having just purchased my new nuvi 660, with city navigator NT europe v9, can
someone explain to me whether I can download for free the maps so that I can
use them on my computer to plan a route? I have searched the garmin web site
for info but I am just more confused.
many thanks

For reasons not clear to me, Garmin chose not to include the software DVD in
the box of the Nuvi line, however many people have been successful in
calling Garmin support and obtaining a PC installable DVD version of the
built in maps at no charge. At least we have for the North America maps.
Give them a call. Be ready with your Nuvi serial number.

For some sicko reason Garmin stops inclduing map software with most =
newer
models with pre-loaded map, and I read that Europe Garmin won't send free
DVD map on request like they do in America.
I dunno if you can be able to install directly from Nuvi to computer or
not, but it may be a good idea to BACKUP the pre-loaded map just incase =
it
get deleted. I read Garmin charges $350-375 to recovery the deleted map.
If not, then you may need to visit the Peer-2-Peer to download what you
paid for <bg>

| thanks for your replies. When I registered the Nuvi, Garmin emailed me an
unlock key. What was this for then?

Let me explain this in simple terms. M O N E Y
The Nuvi line is targeted to the buyer that wants to put the nav unit on the
dash and find their way to a given location such as the mall or the latest
restaurant. It is not geared to the hard core navigator, to the explorer of
uncharted roads. My guess is that 99% of the Nuvi buyers don't know that
Map Source exists and don't care. If it was given to them, chances are only
a handful will ever put it on their computer and even less will actually use
it once they do.
If Garmin sells 1,000,000 units and saves the 50¢ it costs to toss in the
DVD, how many pieces of candy can Johnny buy at the store after school?

|
| To unlock the map of course.

Well, if you don't know what MapSource is and don't care, then it could =
be
your personal problem. But we are the ones who PAY for the GPS + MAP and=
we
do know what MapSource is so I guess we have all the right to care what =
we
paid for and know, fair?

I think you get some wrong thinking here, and no wonder why you don't =
care
<bg>. NO, you don't get anything free from Garmin or any company, but =
you
get what you aleady PAID for with your very own money.=20
Yup! it's sad that many say something like "Windows Vista comes FREE =
with
computer..." no, they should PAY LESS for computer with no Windows =
Vista.

=20
That's the problem with our newer Garmin, but of course Garmin has to =
PAY
MORE than 50=C2=A2 for the DVD, because Garmin has to pay for the LICENSE=
*not*
the price of blank DVD.
And that's the reason why Garmin decides to limit the Unlock to One_Unit
because not_many_people_use_
to_unlock_2nd_unit. Yep! it stink alright, =
but
it comes out of Garmin's mouth (or Garbage's mouth <bg> )
| |
|
| So I go back to my question. Why did Garmin send me an unlock key? Was this
for the maps already on my unit? Can't see that as it was working straight
from the box. I guess that if I want the maps to load on my computer, then I
will have to pay.

| How about giving some idea what the UNLOCK looks like, and do you have
experience with any previous Garmin?
Can't give any answer because dunno what you get at your end.

It is not a problem for the millions of happy GPS users that find their way
home when lost. The Nuvi is a mass market product, not fine tuned to the
explorer. You should be looking at toher models if you are more serious.
What makes you think you paid for the map? If you read the literature, it
gives a description of what is in the box. No DVD is mentioned, therefore,
when you buy the box with the listed contents, you got exactly what you paid
for and agreed to the terms of hte contract. Nothing more, nothing less.
You have no gripe at that point. If you buy a pound of ground beef to grill
up some burgers, do you expect the ketchup for free?

Exactly. You did not pay for hte map DVS. It is not listed as part of the
product. Youmay use and enjoy it and get a lot of value from the software,
but others do not and don't want to pay.
> Yup! it's sad that many say something like "Windows Vista comes FREE with

Right. I've not honestly seen the "free" term but maybe it was used. I've
seen whee it is "included" but no option to exclude it. YOu do need an
operating system of some sort on a computer, free or otherwide, but the Nuvi
comes with the map installed so no DVD or Map Source is needed to make it
work.

Thank you, you made my point. The 50¢ was just a guess , but it may cost
more and they'd have to charge you more or make less profit. Seems silly to
charge everyone for an item that will be used only by a very small
percentage.
Shop around the buy the unit that best fits your needs. If it is not the
Nuvi line, then move on and you have nothing to complain about. The choice
to include a DVD is theirs to make.

The lesser $$$$ in my bank make me think I pay for what they send me (or
if you wanna talk about LICENSE?). If I buy a pound of ground beef then =
I

I don't care the map on DVD or whatever, but I pay for the thing making
lot of LINE, and I want to have what I paid for. They can put on floppy,
CD, or send it on hard drive.

Hahaha we ain't complaining but bitching, and since you are happy with
what you get then you should be smiling instead of jealous of what we get
when you don't <bg> (just between you and me and don't tell anyone .... =
few
weeks ago Garmin sent me the older City Navigator v8, and early this week
they sent me the current last v2008 ... and both are on DVD <bg> )
