Routing with MapSource MetroGuide North America
|
|
| Dien Cai Dau 2007-09-07, 3:33 pm |
| Is anyone else having the same problem that I keep having with trying to
create a route in MapSource (to be downloaded to my GPS)? I am currently
using version 6.13.2, but I have had the same problem ever since I initially
loaded version 6.00 .
It does not matter if I use the Route tool and draw the route on the map or
if I establish waypoints and use <Ctl>R to select the waypoints and
automatically generate a route. The resulting route will always include one
or more detours that for no apparent reason go one block to a couple of
miles out of the way and then come back to the proper road.

What map product are you using? CityNavigator? Topo? Something else?

Possibly something about those roads in your map set data is interacting with
your Routing preferences (vehicle type, speed, etc). Where are you routing to
and from? I can take a shot at routing myself to compare with your results (I
have MapSource 6.13.2 with CityNavigator North America v8).

II have MetroGuide 4.1 and have not noticed that problem. If you could
provide exact to and from addresses I can attempt to duplicate the problem.

| Hi,
I just got a 60CSx and installed the latest version of MapSource and
MetroGuide U.S.A. v8 and was pretty disappointed that the routing didn't
work correctly.
After calling Garmin Tech. support, it was clear what was wrong.
METROGUIDE is for older GPS units and does NOT have routing capabilities. If
your GPS supports routing and auto-routing, you need to get "City Navigator
North America 2008. They also have a NT version, if your GPS unit supports
the new "NT" format.
Hope this helps.

I'm sorry Tom. but Garmin Tech Support has given you misinformation.
MetroGuide North America v6 DOES support routing, to include auto-routing.
Pages 27 and 62 thru 68 of the User's Manual refer.
One my use the Routing icon on the toolbar or may right click within the
screen and select "Begin Routing" from the drop-down menu or may use the
short cut <Ctrl>R and describe the route waypoint by waypoint. Using the
last (keystroke shortcut) method will create an auto-route according to the
preferences (type of vehicle, speeds, avoidances, etc) one has established.

| Hi,
hmmm, that is strange, since when I got my 60CSx and installed MetroGuide
USA v8, the routing did not work at all. Yes, I had the ability ( menus,
input fields, etc ) to create a route, either in MapSource and transfer it
to the unit or directly on the 60CSx, I also could find the addresses I
needed, but the routing itself did not work at all. I created a route from
my house to a friend, just local streets and about 3 mile apart. The routing
program wanted me to go on freeways and highways and had a total of up to 40
miles from source to destination.
I tried and changed all the settings and routing options on the unit, but no
prevail. Any route created with MetroGuide v8 failed very badly. So badly,
that I called Garmin Tech. Support. I even talked to two different people
there..........both told me, that MetroGuide is made for older units and
does not do routing on newer GPS models like the 60CSx.
Then I got City Navigator NT 2008 and got the best routing results ever !
Not sure why, but maybe it depends on the unit which is used or maybe there
is only a Waypoint routing and not an address to address routing. I just
don't know. The only thing I can say for SURE is, that MetroGuide DOES NOT
work with the GPSMAP 60CSx for routing!!
If you have more news on that, please let me know.

MetroGuide version 5 and up does not auto-route on receivers. It does
auto-route on the computer. The old MetroGuide version 4 does auto-route
on receivers (and the data came from TeleAtlas). City Navigator does
auto-route on the receiver and the data comes from Navteq and they
require the copy protection. MetroGuide does not have the unlock
requirements in part because it doesn't have the auto-routing
on the receiver. (Third party hacks are another matter.)

| Hi Dan,
thanks for your answer !! Cool, that explains everything !!! Well, except
that Dien Cai Dau is using MetroGuide North America v6 and says he can
route !!!
My 60CSx also routes, finds addresses, etc, with MetroGuide, it just doesn't
do it correctly !!!!

There is a "hack" or process that will convert the maps from MetroGuide
V5 and later so they will autoroute. It is or was moderately technical
I think, here is one of the later variants on to it:

But it does not support turn by turn directions which IMO auto routing
is pretty much useless without it.

But., you still can't auto route on your PC or using nRoute. :(

Now, if there only was a hack to generate an unlock code.

MetroGuide does not require any unlocking as far as I know. Installed
on a laptop (its intended use) it will autoroute.
The fact that the stubborn can hack the MetroGuide maps so they will
also autoroute on units that were intended to use City Navigator mapping
is a fringe benefit of sorts.
I personally consider $117 (for MetroGuide) or $139 (for City Navigator)
to be not unreasonable for the use I get out of it. That is the first
year "initiation fee" price, thereafter you can get an upgrade for $75
or less. And you don't *need* to upgrade *every* year.
