Adding Elevation Data to Tracks
|
|
| Bob Bailey 2007-09-11, 10:33 am |
| With MapSource I can create a track and save the whole thing as a .gpx.
Even tho MapS knows the elevation, I can do a valid profile of the
track, that information is not stored with the track data in the .gpx.
(See sample below.)
Is there some method or service that can add elevation data to known
coordinates?
tia... Bob
Sample track data:
<trkseg>
<trkpt lat="38.4153907" lon="-78.4384113"/>
<trkpt lat="38.4129329" lon="-78.4373046"/>
<trkpt lat="38.4110536" lon="-78.4397024"/>
<trkpt lat="38.4098970" lon="-78.4404402"/>
<trkpt lat="38.4070056" lon="-78.4393335"/>
<trkpt lat="38.4058491" lon="-78.4398868"/>
<trkpt lat="38.4044034" lon="-78.4393335"/>

Which version of MapSource are you using? Here's a sample portion of
a .gpx file saved with
version 6.10.2:
<trk>
<name> TuesdayEveBollingerR
ide</name>
<trkseg>
<trkpt lat="37.713897" lon="-121.940539">
<ele>122.224731</ele>
<time>2007-08-08T00:52:42Z</time>
</trkpt>
<trkpt lat="37.713747" lon="-121.940475">
<ele>98.191895</ele>
<time>2007-08-08T00:52:55Z</time>
....
Note that the elevation and timestamp are included for each
trackpoint.
The above tracklog was loaded into MapSource directly from my GPS as
the "Active Log." Of course if I first save it on the GPS then the
elevation and timestamps are omitted.

I'm using MapSource 6.13.2. Remember that the track that I created was
done with MapSource NOT in the field.

Then it's highly unlikely to have elevation data, unless your underlying map
product was Topo, and even then, I'm not sure it would have it. Remember
that MapSource is basically a glorified map viewer, and rather dependant on
whatever map product you feed it.
The CityNavigator series definitely does not include elevation in its map
data, so without a reading from a GPS unit, MapSource has no way to
figure it out.

I have Memory Map, that does include elevation. When looking at the
properties of the created track the total ascent and descent are shown,
also right clicking you can select the height profile. Incidentally
does anyone know how accurate the total ascent and descent figures are?

Memory Map is a little pricey for my limited needs, about 200USD.
