Anyone have issues calibrating the screen on a StreetPilot 2610?

| Recently, we had some problems with the touchscreen on our venerable
StreetPilot 2610 going out of whack (couldn't hit anything on the left side
of the screen). We went through the screen calibration process, and got
"Calibration Failed" numerous times; my wife finally got the claibration to
take this morning, after a half-dozen consecutive tries (she was /really/
stuck in traffic, and had time to kill).
Anyone else ever get that error? It's working for now, so we're happy, and
I'm going to dig out the remote for future emergencies of this nature, but
if this is going to be something that recurs frequently, I'd sorta like to
know.

I had a four months old refurbished 2610 that had exactly the same
issues. I called Garmin support (1-800-800-1020), got a RMA number,
sent it in, and two weeks later had a like new 2610. That was about 3-4
months ago and it has been fine since.
If yours is out of warranty, your pretty much out of luck. Garmin wants
$225 for the flat rate repair on a 2610 and you can buy a refurb for a
little bit more. A refurb comes with a one year warranty, the flat rate
repair only carries a 90 day warranty.
If you're not going to fix it, send me an email. I might be interested
in buying it for parts.

I had trouble with a 2610 that spends about 95% of it's time mounted on a
motorcycle. Specs of dirt got between the screen and the case. Using a
brush from an electric razor, I was able to clean them out. When brushing,
I had the edge I was brushing turned up, so that anything would fall out
instead of further down. Might be worth a look!!!

In this case, why not apply some soft CLEAR silicon (the one uses on
bathroom or similar) around the edge which would stop dirt from getting
inside. And because the soft silicon will always remain soft so you can
peel off later if you wish.

Now, now, let's not be hasty :-) It's holding up fine for the moment, so I'll
chalk it up to light trauma from travel (my mother-in-law took it to AZ for
use in a rental car recently). Thanks for looking up the cost of the repair,
though.
